1 Kings 14

1At that time Abijah son of Jeroboam became sick.

2Jeroboam said to his wife, “Please get up and disguise yourself, so that they will not know that you are the wife of Jeroboam, and go to Shiloh. Behold, Ahijah the prophet is there; he is the one who spoke concerning me, that I would be king over this people.”

3And take in your hand ten loaves of bread, some cakes, and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the boy.

4Jeroboam’s wife did so. She arose and went to Shiloh, and came to Ahijah’s house. Now Ahijah could not see, because his eyes were dim because of his old age.

5And Yahweh said to Ahijah, “Look, Jeroboam’s wife is coming to ask you about her son, because he is sick. You shall speak to her like this and like that. And when she comes, she will be disguising herself.”

6And when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet as she came in at the doorway, he said, “Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why are you disguising yourself? For I am sent to you with a hard message.”

7Go and say to Jeroboam, ‘Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: Because I raised you up from among the people and made you ruler over my people Israel,’

8and I tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you. But you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments and who walked after me with all his heart, to do only what was right in my eyes.

9and have done evil above all who were before you. You went and made for yourself other gods and molten images to provoke me to anger, and you have cast me behind your back.

10Therefore, behold, I am bringing disaster on the house of Jeroboam, and I will cut off from Jeroboam every male, bond and free in Israel, and I will burn away after the house of Jeroboam, just as one burns away dung until it is all gone.

11Anyone belonging to Jeroboam who dies in the city, the dogs will eat; and anyone who dies in the field, the birds of the sky will eat, for Yahweh has spoken.

12But as for you, arise, go to your house. When your feet enter the city, the child will die.

13All Israel will mourn for him and bury him, because he alone of Jeroboam’s house will come to the grave, since in him something good toward Yahweh, the God of Israel, has been found in the house of Jeroboam.

14And Yahweh will raise up for himself a king over Israel who will cut off the house of Jeroboam this day. But what? Even now.

15And Yahweh will strike Israel, as a reed sways in the water, and he will uproot Israel from this good land that he gave to their fathers, and scatter them beyond the River, because they made their Asherim, provoking Yahweh.

16And he will give up Israel because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he committed and by which he caused Israel to sin.

17Then Jeroboam’s wife arose and went and came to Tirzah. As she came to the threshold of the house, the boy died.

18They buried him, and all Israel mourned for him, according to the word of Yahweh that he had spoken through his servant Ahijah the prophet.

19The rest of the acts of Jeroboam, how he fought and how he reigned, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

20The days that Jeroboam reigned were twenty-two years. Then he lay down with his fathers, and Nadab his son became king in his place.

21Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city that Yahweh had chosen from all the tribes of Israel to put his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite woman.

22And Judah did what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and they provoked him to jealousy more than all that their fathers had done, by the sins that they committed.

23They too built for themselves high places, pillars, and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree.

24There were also cult prostitutes in the land. They did according to all the abominations of the nations that Yahweh had driven out before the sons of Israel.

25In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem.

26He took the treasures of the house of Yahweh and the treasures of the king’s house; he took everything. He also took all the gold shields that Solomon had made.

27So King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and committed them into the hand of the commanders of the runners, who guarded the entrance of the king’s house.

28And whenever the king entered the house of Yahweh, the guards would carry them and then return them to the guards’ chamber.

29The rest of the acts of Rehoboam, and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

30And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all their days.

31And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And his mother's name was Naamah the Ammonite. And Abijam his son reigned in his place.
