1 Kings 17

1And Elijah the Tishbite, from the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As Yahweh, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there will be neither dew nor rain in these years, except by my word.”

2And the word of Yahweh came to him, saying,

3Go from here and turn yourself eastward, and hide yourself by the Wadi Cherith, which is east of the Jordan.

4And it shall be that you will drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there.

5So he went and did according to the word of Yahweh, and he went and stayed by the Wadi Cherith, which is before the Jordan.

6And the ravens were bringing him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he would drink from the wadi.

7And it happened after some days that the wadi dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

8Then the word of Yahweh came to him, saying,

9Get up, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Look, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.

10So he arose and went to Zarephath. When he came to the entrance of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.”

11As she went to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand.”

12And she said, “As Yahweh your God lives, I have no bread-cake, only a handful of flour in the jar and a little oil in the jug. And look, I am gathering two sticks, so that I may go in and prepare it for myself and for my son, and we may eat it and die.”

13And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear. Go, do as you have said. But first make me a small cake from there and bring it out to me, and afterward make some for yourself and for your son.”

14For this is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up, and the jug of oil will not run dry, until the day Yahweh gives rain on the face of the ground.’

15So she went and did according to the word of Elijah, and she ate—he and she and her household—for many days.

16The jar of flour was not used up, and the jug of oil did not run out, according to the word of Yahweh that he had spoken by the hand of Elijah.

17After these things, the son of the woman who owned the house became sick, and his illness became very severe, until no breath was left in him.

18She said to Elijah, “What do I have to do with you, man of God? Have you come to me to bring my iniquity to remembrance and to cause my son to die?”

19And he said to her, “Give me your son.” Then he took him from her bosom, carried him up to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.

20Then he cried out to Yahweh and said, “O Yahweh my God, have you also brought harm on the widow with whom I am staying, by causing her son to die?”

21Then he stretched himself out over the boy three times, and he cried out to Yahweh and said, “Yahweh my God, please let this boy’s life return to him.”

22And Yahweh listened to the voice of Elijah, and the life of the child returned to his inner being, and he lived.

23Then Elijah took the boy, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, “See, your son is alive.”

24Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of Yahweh in your mouth is truth.”
