1 Kings 9

1And it happened, when Solomon had finished building the house of Yahweh and the king’s house, and all that Solomon desired to make,

2Then Yahweh appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon.

3And Yahweh said to him, “I have heard your prayer and your plea for favor that you made before me. I have consecrated this house that you built, to put my name there forever, and my eyes and my heart will be there all the days.”

4And as for you, if you walk before me as David your father walked, with integrity of heart and with uprightness, doing according to all that I have commanded you, and if you keep my statutes and my judgments,

5then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, just as I spoke concerning David your father, saying, ‘A man of yours will not be cut off from the throne of Israel.’

6But if you or your sons turn away from following me, and do not keep my commandments and my statutes that I have set before you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them,

7then I will cut off Israel from the face of the land that I have given them, and the house that I have consecrated for my name I will cast out from before my face, and Israel will become a proverb and a taunt among all peoples.

8And this house will become a ruin. Everyone who passes by it will be appalled and will whistle, and they will say, ‘Why has Yahweh done thus to this land and to this house?’

9And they will say, ‘Because they abandoned Yahweh their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and they held fast to other gods and bowed down to them and served them, therefore Yahweh brought all this disaster on them.’

10And it happened at the end of twenty years, in which Solomon had built the two houses—the house of Yahweh and the king's house—

11Hiram king of Tyre had supplied Solomon with cedar timber, cypress timber, and gold, according to all his desire; then King Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.

12So Hiram went out from Tyre to see the cities that Solomon had given him, but they were not pleasing in his eyes.

13And he said, “What are these cities that you have given me, my brother?” So he called them the land of Cabul to this day.

14And Hiram sent to the king one hundred and twenty talents of gold.

15This is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon levied to build the house of Yahweh, his own house, the Millo, the wall of Jerusalem, Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer.

16Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and captured Gezer and burned it with fire, and he killed the Canaanites who lived in the city, and gave it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife.

17And Solomon built Gezer and Lower Beth-horon,

18and Baalath, and Tamar in the wilderness, in the land.

19also all the storage cities that belonged to Solomon, the chariot cities, the horsemen's cities, and whatever Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.

20All the people who remained of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, who were not of the sons of Israel—

21their children who were left after them in the land, whom the sons of Israel had not been able to devote to destruction—Solomon conscripted them for forced labor, to this day.

22But from the sons of Israel Solomon made no servants, for they were the men of war, his servants, his commanders, his officers, and the commanders of his chariots and his horsemen.

23These were the chief officers of the deputies who were over the work for Solomon: five hundred and fifty, ruling over the people who were doing the work.

24But Pharaoh’s daughter went up from the City of David to her house that he had built for her; then he built the Millo.

25And Solomon offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar that he had built for Yahweh three times a year, and he burned incense with it before Yahweh. Thus he completed the house.

26King Solomon also built a fleet of ships at Ezion-geber, which is beside Eloth on the shore of the Red Sea, in the land of Edom.

27And Hiram sent his servants on the ship with Solomon’s servants—men of ships, men who knew the sea.

28They went to Ophir and took from there four hundred and twenty talents of gold, and brought it to King Solomon.
