1 Samuel 29

1The Philistines gathered all their camps at Aphek, while Israel was encamped by the spring that is in Jezreel.

2And the lords of the Philistines were passing by by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men were passing by at the rear with Achish.

3Then the Philistine commanders said, “What are these Hebrews?” And Achish said to the Philistine commanders, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul king of Israel, who has been with me these days or these years? And I have found nothing against him from the day of his defecting until this very day.”

4But the Philistine commanders were angry with him, and the Philistine commanders said to him, “Send the man back, so that he may return to his place where you assigned him, and let him not go down with us into battle, lest he become an adversary to us in the battle. For with what could this man reconcile himself to his lord? Would it not be with the heads of those men?”

5Is this not David, of whom they sang to one another in the dances, saying, ‘Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?”

6Then Achish called David and said to him, “As Yahweh lives, you are upright, and your going out and your coming in with me in the camp is good in my sight; for I have not found any evil in you from the day of your coming to me to this day. But in the eyes of the lords of the Philistines, you are not good.”

7So now, return and go in peace, and do not do evil in the eyes of the Philistine lords.

8David said to Achish, “But what have I done? And what have you found against your servant from the day I entered your service until this day, that I should not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”

9Achish answered and said to David, “I know that you are good in my eyes, like an angel of God. Yet the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He must not go up with us into battle.’”

10Now rise early in the morning, you and your master's servants who came with you. When you rise early in the morning and it is light for you, go.

11So David rose early, he and his men, to leave in the morning and return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
