2 Chronicles 12

1And when Rehoboam’s kingdom was established, and he had become strong, he abandoned the law of Yahweh—and all Israel with him.

2And in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had acted unfaithfully against Yahweh.

3with 1,200 chariots and 60,000 horsemen, and the people who came with him from Egypt were without number: Libyans, Sukkites, and Cushites.

4He captured the fortified cities that belonged to Judah and came as far as Jerusalem.

5Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the officials of Judah who had gathered in Jerusalem because of Shishak, and he said to them, “Thus says Yahweh: You have forsaken me, so I also have forsaken you into the hand of Shishak.”

6Then the leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “Yahweh is righteous.”

7When Yahweh saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, saying, “They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance, and my wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.”

8For they will become his servants, so that they may know my service and the service of the kingdoms of the lands.

9So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem and took the treasuries of the house of Yahweh and the treasuries of the king’s house. He took everything; he also took the gold shields that Solomon had made.

10So King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and committed them to the care of the commanders of the guards, who kept watch at the entrance of the king’s house.

11And whenever the king entered the house of Yahweh, the guards would come and carry them, and then return them to the guards’ chamber.

12And when he humbled himself, the anger of Yahweh turned away from him, so as not to destroy him completely; and also in Judah there were good things.

13So King Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem and reigned. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city that Yahweh had chosen from all the tribes of Israel to put his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite.

14And he did what was evil, because he had not set his heart to seek Yahweh.

15The acts of Rehoboam, the first and the last, are they not written in the records of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer, according to genealogical enrollment? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all their days.

16And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David, and Abijah his son reigned in his place.
