2 Kings 14

1In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash became king of Judah.

2He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jehoaddin, from Jerusalem.

3He did what was right in the eyes of Yahweh, yet not like David his father; he did according to all that Joash his father had done.

4However, the high places were not removed; the people still were sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.

5And it happened, as soon as the kingdom was firmly in his hand, that he struck down his servants who had struck down the king his father.

6But he did not put the sons of the killers to death, according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, which Yahweh commanded, saying, “Fathers shall not be put to death for sons, and sons shall not be put to death for fathers; rather, each man shall die for his own sin.”

7He struck down ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, captured Sela in battle, and called its name Joktheel, to this day.

8Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us look one another in the face.”

9Then Jehoash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “The thornbush that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as a wife.’ And a wild beast that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thornbush.”

10You have indeed struck Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Be honored, and stay at home. Why should you provoke disaster, so that you fall—you and Judah with you?

11But Amaziah would not listen, so Jehoash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah met face to face at Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah.

12And Judah was defeated before Israel, and each man fled to his tent.

13And Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash, son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh; then he came to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, four hundred cubits.

14He took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels found in the house of Yahweh and in the treasuries of the king’s house, and the hostages, and returned to Samaria.

15The rest of the acts of Jehoash, and all that he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah—are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

16And Jehoash slept with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel, and Jeroboam his son reigned in his place.

17Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel.

18The rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

19And they conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; and they sent after him to Lachish and put him to death there.

20They carried him on horses, and he was buried in Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David.

21Then all the people of Judah took Azariah—he was sixteen years old—and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.

22He rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah after the king lay down with his fathers.

23In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel, became king in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years.

24He did what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh. He did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he caused Israel to commit.

25He restored the border of Israel from Lebo-hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of Yahweh, the God of Israel, which he had spoken by the hand of his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet, who was from Gath-hepher.

26For Yahweh saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter, and there was neither bond nor free, and there was no helper for Israel.

27But Yahweh had not said that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, so he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Joash.

28The rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did, and his might, how he fought, and how he restored Damascus and Hamath to Judah in Israel—are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

29And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, with the kings of Israel, and Zechariah his son reigned in his place.
