Samuel 22
David Praises God’s Deliverance
Open in the reader →1And David spoke to Yahweh the words of this song on the day when Yahweh delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
And he said: “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer for me.”
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior—you save me from violence.
I call on Yahweh, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.
For the waves of death surrounded me; the torrents of worthlessness terrified me.
The cords of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I call on Yahweh; I call to my God. He hears my voice from his temple, and my cry for help reaches his ears.
Then the earth reeled and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled and shook, because he was angry.
Smoke went up from his nostrils, and consuming fire from his mouth; coals blazed from him.
He bent the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet.
He rode on a cherub and flew; he appeared on the wings of the wind.
He made darkness a shelter around him, a massing of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
From the brightness before him, coals of fire blazed forth.
Yahweh thundered from heaven, and the Most High gave his voice.
He sent arrows and scattered them; lightning, and threw them into confusion.
Then the channels of the sea were seen; the foundations of the world were laid bare at the rebuke of Yahweh, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
He sent from on high; he took me; he drew me out of many waters.
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but Yahweh was my support.
He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.
Yahweh has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has repaid me.
For I have kept the ways of Yahweh, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For all his judgments were before me, and I did not turn away from his statutes.
I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my iniquity.
And Yahweh repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness before his eyes.
With the faithful you show yourself faithful; with the blameless warrior you show yourself blameless.
With the pure you show yourself pure, but with the crooked you show yourself twisted.
You save an afflicted people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low.
For you are my lamp, O Yahweh, and Yahweh lights up my darkness.
For by you I can run against a troop; by my God I can leap over a wall.
As for God, his way is blameless; the word of Yahweh is proven; he is a shield to all who take refuge in him.
For who is God besides Yahweh? And who is a rock besides our God?
God is my strong refuge, and he makes my way blameless.
He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me secure on my heights.
He trains my hands for battle, and my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You gave me the shield of your salvation, and your gentleness made me great.
You widen my steps beneath me, and my ankles have not given way.
I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, and I did not turn back until they were consumed.
I consumed them and shattered them, and they did not rise; they fell under my feet.
You armed me with strength for battle; you caused those who rose against me to bow beneath me.
You gave me the necks of my enemies; I destroyed those who hated me.
They cried for help, but there was no one to save; they cried to Yahweh, but he did not answer them.
I crushed them like the dust of the earth; like the mud of the streets I pounded them and trampled them down.
You delivered me from the strivings of my people; you kept me as the head of nations; a people I had not known served me.
The sons of foreigners come cringing to me; at the hearing of the ear they obey me.
Foreigners lose heart and come trembling out of their strongholds.
Yahweh lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be God, the rock of my salvation.
the God who gives vengeance to me and brings peoples down under me.
who brings me out from my enemies; you exalt me above those who rise against me; you deliver me from the violent man.
Therefore I will praise you among the nations, O Yahweh, and I will sing praise to your name.
He gives great salvation to his king and shows covenant faithfulness to his anointed, to David and to his offspring forever.
