Acts 14

1In Iconium they entered together into the synagogue of the Jews and spoke in such a way that a great multitude of both Jews and Greeks believed.

2But the Jews who were disobedient stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.

3So they stayed there a considerable time, speaking boldly for the Lord, who was bearing witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done through their hands.

4But the people of the city were divided, and some were with the Jews and some with the apostles.

5And when an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and the Jews, together with their rulers, to mistreat them and to stone them,

6when they learned of it, they fled to the cities of Lycaonia—Lystra and Derbe—and the surrounding region,

7And there they were preaching the good news.

8And in Lystra a certain man was sitting, powerless in his feet, lame from his mother's womb, who had never walked.

9This man listened to Paul speaking, who, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be saved,

10He said in a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And he leaped up and began walking.

11And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, “The gods, having become like men, have come down to us!”

12And they were calling Barnabas Zeus, and Paul Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.

13And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was before the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the gates and wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds.

14But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard, they tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying out,

15and saying, “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, bringing you good news to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them.”

16In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways.

17Yet he did not leave himself without witness, doing good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness.

18Even by saying these things, they barely restrained the crowds from sacrificing to them.

19But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and after persuading the crowds and stoning Paul, they dragged him outside the city, supposing that he was dead.

20But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went into the city. And on the next day he went out with Barnabas to Derbe.

21And after proclaiming the good news in that city and making many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch,

22strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to remain in the faith, and saying that through many afflictions we must enter the kingdom of God.

23And after appointing elders for them in every church, and praying with fasting, they entrusted them to the Lord, in whom they had believed.

24And after passing through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia.

25And after speaking the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia,

26And from there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work that they had fulfilled.

27And when they arrived and gathered the church together, they reported all that God had done with them, and that he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.

28And they stayed with the disciples for no little time.
