Acts 20

1After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouraging them and saying farewell, he departed to go to Macedonia.

2After passing through those regions and encouraging them with many words, he came into Greece.

3After spending three months there, when a plot was made against him by the Jews as he was about to sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia.

4And Sopater son of Pyrrhus, a Berean, accompanied him; and Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy; and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia.

5These men went on ahead and were waiting for us in Troas.

6But we sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and came to them at Troas within five days, where we stayed seven days.

7On the first day of the week, when we had gathered to break bread, Paul was speaking to them, intending to depart the next day, and he prolonged the message until midnight.

8There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered.

9And a certain young man named Eutychus, sitting in the window, was sinking into a deep sleep while Paul was speaking at length; and being overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead.

10But Paul went down and fell upon him, and embracing him said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.”

11Then he went upstairs, broke the bread, and ate; and after talking for a long time, until dawn, he departed.

12And they took the boy away alive, and were not a little comforted.

13But we, having gone ahead to the ship, set sail for Assos, intending to take Paul on board from there, for so he had arranged, since he himself intended to go by land.

14And when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and came to Mitylene.

15And from there, after setting sail, on the next day we came opposite Chios; on the following day we touched at Samos; and on the day after that we came to Miletus.

16For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hurrying to be in Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost.

17From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church.

18When they came to him, he said to them, “You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia,”

19serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews.

20how I did not shrink back from declaring to you anything that was profitable and teaching you publicly and from house to house,

21solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus.

22And now, behold, bound in the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there,

23except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in city after city, saying that chains and afflictions await me.

24But I do not count my life as of any value to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus: to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

25And now, look, I know that none of you among whom I went about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again.

26Therefore I testify to you on this day that I am innocent of the blood of all.

27For I did not shrink back from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.

28Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which he obtained through the blood of his own.

29I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.

30and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.

31Therefore stay alert, remembering that for three years, night and day, I did not stop admonishing each one with tears.

32And now I entrust you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build up and to give the inheritance among all those who have been sanctified.

33I coveted no one's silver or gold or clothing.

34You yourselves know that these hands served my needs and the needs of those who were with me.

35In everything I showed you that by laboring in this way it is necessary to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

36And after saying these things, he knelt down with them all and prayed.

37They all wept a great deal, threw their arms around Paul’s neck, and kept kissing him.

38grieving especially over the word that he had spoken, that they would no longer see his face. And they were accompanying him to the ship.
