Amos 4

Wealthy Women Face Judgment

Open in the reader →

Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their masters, “Bring, that we may drink.”

The Lord GOD has sworn by his holiness: For behold, days are coming upon you when they will lift you away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks.

And through the breaches you will go out, each woman straight ahead of her, and you will be cast out toward Harmon,” declares Yahweh.

Come to Bethel—and transgress; to Gilgal—and multiply transgression. Bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes every three days,

And burn a thank offering from leavened bread, and proclaim freewill offerings—announce them! For this is what you have loved, O sons of Israel, declares the Lord GOD.

And I also gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and lack of bread in all your places; yet you did not return to me, declares Yahweh.

And I also withheld the rain from you when there were still three months until the harvest; and I caused it to rain on one city, but on another city I did not cause it to rain. One field received rain, but the field on which it did not rain dried up.

So two or three cities staggered to one city to drink water, but they were not satisfied; yet you did not return to me, declares Yahweh.

I struck you with blight and mildew; your many gardens and your vineyards, your fig trees and your olive trees, the locust devoured; yet you did not return to me, declares Yahweh.

I sent among you a plague in the manner of Egypt; I killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses, and I made the stench of your camps rise even into your nostrils; yet you did not return to me, declares Yahweh.

I overthrew some among you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you became like a brand snatched from the burning; yet you did not return to me, declares Yahweh.

Therefore, thus I will do to you, Israel; because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, Israel.

For behold, the one who forms the mountains and creates the wind, and declares to man what his thought is, who makes the dawn darkness and treads on the heights of the earth—Yahweh, the God of hosts, is his name.
