Amos 6

1Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria, the distinguished men of the foremost of the nations, to whom the house of Israel comes.

2Cross over to Calneh and see; and from there go to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory?

3you who put far away the evil day and bring near the seat of violence.

4those who lie on beds of ivory and sprawl on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the stall—

5who strum on the mouth of the harp, and like David invent for themselves instruments of song—

6who drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph—

7Therefore now they will go into exile at the head of the exiles, and the revelry of those who sprawl will pass away.

8The Lord GOD has sworn by himself—oracle of Yahweh, the God of Armies: I abhor the pride of Jacob, and I hate his citadels; and I will hand over the city and all that fills it.

9And it will happen that if ten men remain in one house, they will die.

10Then his uncle, the one who burns him, will carry him out to bring the bones out of the house, and he will say to the one who is in the innermost part of the house, “Is there still anyone with you?” And he will say, “No one.” Then he will say, “Hush! For we must not mention the name of Yahweh.”

11For behold, Yahweh commands, and the great house will be struck into fragments, and the small house into pieces.

12Do horses run on rock? Does one plow there with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood.

13you who rejoice over nothing, who say, “Have we not by our own strength taken horns for ourselves?”

14For behold, I am raising up against you a nation, O house of Israel, declares Yahweh, the God of hosts, and they will oppress you from Lebo-hamath to the Wadi of the Arabah.
