Amos 9
Unavoidable Judgment and Restoration
Open in the reader →1I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and he said: Strike the capital, so that the thresholds may shake; shatter them on the heads of all of them. And I will kill their survivors with the sword; not one who flees among them will get away, and not one who escapes among them will be delivered.
Though they dig into Sheol, from there my hand will take them; and though they climb up to the heavens, from there I will bring them down.
And if they hide themselves on the summit of Carmel, from there I will search them out and take them; and if they conceal themselves from before my eyes on the floor of the sea, from there I will command the serpent, and it will bite them.
And if they go into captivity before their enemies, from there I will command the sword, and it will kill them; and I will set my eyes on them for harm and not for good.
And the Lord GOD of hosts is the one who touches the earth, and it melts, and all who dwell in it mourn; and all of it rises like the Nile and sinks like the Nile of Egypt.
He who builds his upper chambers in the heavens, and has founded his vault upon the earth, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the face of the earth—Yahweh is his name.
Are you not like the Cushites to me, O sons of Israel? declares Yahweh. Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor, and Aram from Kir?
Look, the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth. Yet I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob," declares Yahweh.
For look, I am commanding, and I will shake the house of Israel among all the nations, as one shakes with a sieve, yet not a pebble will fall to the ground.
By the sword all the sinners of my people will die—those who say, ‘The disaster will not overtake us or come against us.’
In that day I will raise up the fallen shelter of David, and I will wall up its breaches, and I will raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old.
so that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name,” declares Yahweh, who does this.
Behold, days are coming, declares Yahweh, when the plowman will overtake the reaper, and the one who treads grapes the one who sows the seed; the mountains will drip sweet wine, and all the hills will melt.
I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel, and they will rebuild ruined cities and inhabit them; they will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit.
I will plant them on their land, and they will never again be uprooted from the land that I have given them, says Yahweh your God.
