Deuteronomy 3

1Then we turned and went up by the way of Bashan, and Og king of Bashan came out to meet us, he and all his people, for battle at Edrei.

2And Yahweh said to me, “Do not fear him, for I have given him, all his people, and his land into your hand; and you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.”

3So Yahweh our God also gave into our hand Og king of Bashan, and all his people, and we struck him down until he had no survivor left.

4And we captured all his cities at that time; there was not a city that we did not take from them: sixty cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

5All these were fortified cities with a high wall, double doors, and bars, besides a great many rural towns.

6And we devoted them to destruction, just as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying every city—men, women, and little ones.

7But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as plunder for ourselves.

8And at that time we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the Wadi Arnon as far as Mount Hermon.

9The Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir—

10all the cities of the tableland, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

11For only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. Look, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in Rabbah of the Ammonites? Its length was nine cubits and its width four cubits, by the cubit of a man.

12And we took possession of this land at that time, from Aroer, which is on the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with its cities; I gave it to the Reubenites and the Gadites.

13And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh—all the region of Argob, that is, all Bashan. That is called the land of the Rephaim.

14Jair son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and he called them, that is, Bashan, Havvoth-jair, to this day.

15And to Machir I gave Gilead.

16And to the Reubenites and to the Gadites I gave from Gilead as far as the Arnon Valley, the middle of the valley as a border, and as far as the Jabbok Valley, the border of the sons of Ammon.

17also the Arabah, with the Jordan as its border, from Kinnereth as far as the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, below the slopes of Pisgah on the east.

18And I commanded you at that time, saying, ‘Yahweh your God has given you this land to possess. You shall cross over armed before your brothers, the sons of Israel—all the men of valor.’

19Only your wives, your little ones, and your livestock—I know that you have much livestock—shall remain in your towns that I have given you,

20until Yahweh gives rest to your brothers as to you, and they also take possession of the land that Yahweh your God is giving them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession that I have given you.

21And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, ‘Your eyes have seen all that Yahweh your God did to these two kings; so Yahweh will do to all the kingdoms through which you are passing.’

22Do not fear them, for Yahweh your God is the one who fights for you.

23And I pleaded with Yahweh at that time, saying,

24O Lord Yahweh, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your strong hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do deeds like your deeds and mighty acts like yours?

25Please let me cross over and see the good land that is beyond the Jordan, this good hill country and Lebanon.

26But Yahweh was angry with me because of you and did not listen to me, and Yahweh said to me, “Enough from you; do not speak to me again about this matter.”

27Go up to the top of Pisgah, and lift up your eyes westward and northward and southward and eastward, and see with your eyes; for you shall not cross this Jordan.

28But commission Joshua, and strengthen him and encourage him, for he will cross over before this people, and he will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.

29So we stayed in the valley opposite Beth-peor.
