Exodus 14

1Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2Speak to the sons of Israel, that they turn back and camp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. Before Baal-zephon, opposite it, you shall camp by the sea.

3For Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel, ‘They are confused in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.’

4And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them; and I will get glory over Pharaoh and over all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh.” And they did so.

5It was reported to the king of Egypt that the people had fled, and the heart of Pharaoh and his servants was turned against the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?”

6So he harnessed his chariot and took his people with him.

7And he took six hundred choice chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them.

8And Yahweh hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the sons of Israel, while the sons of Israel were going out with a high hand.

9The Egyptians pursued them and overtook them as they were camped by the sea—all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, his horsemen, and his army—by Pi-hahiroth, before Baal-zephon.

10As Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them; and they were very afraid, and the sons of Israel cried out to Yahweh.

11And they said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you took us away to die in the wilderness? What is this you have done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?”

12Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone so that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.

13And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear. Stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you see today, you will never see again forever.”

14Yahweh will fight for you, and you must be silent.

15Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the sons of Israel to set out.”

16But as for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and split it, so that the sons of Israel may go through the midst of the sea on dry ground.

17And I—behold, I am hardening the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and over all his army, over his chariots and over his horsemen.

18And the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh, when I gain glory through Pharaoh, through his chariots, and through his horsemen.

19Then the angel of God, who had been going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them.

20And it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel, and there was the cloud and the darkness, yet it lit up the night; and the one did not come near the other all night.

21Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Yahweh drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were split.

22And the sons of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right and on their left.

23The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea—all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

24And in the morning watch, Yahweh looked down on the camp of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud, and threw the camp of the Egyptians into confusion.

25And he removed the wheels from his chariots, and drove them with difficulty. And Egypt said, “Let me flee from before Israel, for the LORD is fighting for them against Egypt.”

26Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the waters may return over the Egyptians, over their chariots, and over their horsemen.”

27So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and toward morning the sea returned to its usual place, while the Egyptians were fleeing toward it. And Yahweh threw the Egyptians into the midst of the sea.

28And the waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, all the army of Pharaoh that had gone after them into the sea; not one of them remained.

29But the sons of Israel walked on dry ground through the midst of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right and on their left.

30So Yahweh saved Israel that day from the hand of Egypt, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.

31Israel saw the great hand that Yahweh had done against Egypt, and the people feared Yahweh, and they believed in Yahweh and in Moses his servant.
