Exodus 16

1They set out from Elim, and the whole congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had gone out from the land of Egypt.

2And the whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness.

3And the sons of Israel said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of Yahweh in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full. For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

4Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Behold, I am raining bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion each day, so that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.”

5And on the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as what they gather day by day.

6Then Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, “At evening you will know that Yahweh brought you out from the land of Egypt.”

7And in the morning you will see the glory of Yahweh, because he has heard your grumblings against Yahweh. And what are we, that you grumble against us?

8And Moses said, “When Yahweh gives you meat to eat in the evening and bread in the morning to the full, because Yahweh hears your grumblings that you are grumbling against him—what are we? Your grumblings are not against us, but against Yahweh.”

9Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, ‘Come near before Yahweh, for he has heard your grumblings.’”

10And it happened, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, that they turned toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of Yahweh appeared in the cloud.

11And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

12I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel. Speak to them, saying, ‘Between the evenings you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread, and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God.’

13And in the evening the quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning a layer of dew was around the camp.

14When the layer of dew had gone up, behold, on the surface of the wilderness was a fine, flaky thing, fine as frost on the ground.

15When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that Yahweh has given you to eat.”

16This is the word that Yahweh has commanded: ‘Gather from it, each man according to his eating; an omer per person, according to the number of your persons. Each man shall take for those who are in his tent.’

17And the sons of Israel did so, and they gathered, some more and some less.

18When they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much had nothing left over, and the one who gathered little had no lack; each one gathered according to what he could eat.

19And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it until morning.”

20But they did not listen to Moses, and some men left some of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was angry with them.

21And they gathered it morning by morning, each according to what he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.

22And it happened on the sixth day that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each person, and all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses.

23And he said to them, “This is what Yahweh has spoken: Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to Yahweh. What you will bake, bake; and what you will boil, boil; and all that is left over, set aside for yourselves to be kept until the morning.”

24So they left it until morning, just as Moses had commanded, and it did not stink, nor were there any worms in it.

25And Moses said, “Eat it today, because today is a Sabbath to the LORD; today you will not find it in the field.”

26For six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, a Sabbath, there will be none.

27And it happened on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none.

28Then Yahweh said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?”

29See, for Yahweh has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Let each man stay in his place; let no man go out from his place on the seventh day.

30So the people rested on the seventh day.

31The house of Israel called its name manna, and it was like white coriander seed, and its taste was like wafers with honey.

32And Moses said, “This is the thing that Yahweh has commanded: Let a full omer of it be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out from the land of Egypt.”

33And Moses said to Aaron, “Take one jar, and put an omerful of manna in it, and place it before Yahweh, to be kept throughout your generations.”

34As Yahweh commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the testimony for safekeeping.

35And the sons of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

36An omer is a tenth of an ephah.
