Exodus 22

1If the thief is found breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there is no bloodguilt for him.

2But if the sun has risen on him, there is bloodguilt for him. He must surely make restitution. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

3If the stolen item is actually found alive in his possession—whether ox, donkey, or sheep—he shall repay double.

4If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed over, and lets his animal loose so that it grazes in another man's field, he shall make restitution from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard.

5If a fire breaks out and catches in thorns, so that stacked grain or standing grain or the field is consumed, the one who started the fire must surely make restitution.

6If a man gives his neighbor money or goods to keep, and it is stolen from the man's house, if the thief is found, he shall pay double.

7If the thief is not found, the owner of the house shall come near to God to determine whether he has not laid his hand on his neighbor’s property.

8For every case of wrongdoing involving an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any lost thing about which someone says, ‘This is it,’ the case of both parties shall come before God. The one whom God declares guilty shall pay double to his neighbor.

9If a man gives his neighbor a donkey, or an ox, or a sheep, or any animal to keep, and it dies, or is injured, or is carried off, with no one seeing it,

10an oath of Yahweh shall be between the two of them, that he has not put his hand to his neighbor’s property; and its owner shall accept it, and he shall not make restitution.

11But if it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to its owner.

12But if it is torn by beasts, he shall bring it as evidence; he shall not make restitution for what was torn.

13And if a man borrows from his neighbor, and it is injured or dies, if its owner is not with it, he shall surely make restitution.

14If its owner is with it, he shall not make restitution; if it is a hired thing, it came for its hire.

15If a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he must surely pay the bride-price for her to be his wife.

16If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he shall weigh out silver equal to the bride-price for virgins.

17You shall not let a sorceress live.

18Whoever lies with an animal shall surely be put to death.

19Whoever sacrifices to any god, except to Yahweh alone, shall be devoted to destruction.

20You shall not mistreat a foreigner or oppress him, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.

21You shall not afflict any widow or orphan.

22If you indeed afflict him, and if he indeed cries out to me, I will surely hear his cry.

23then my anger will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives will become widows and your sons fatherless.

24If you lend money to my people, to the poor among you, you shall not be like a creditor to him; you shall not impose interest on him.

25If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun sets.

26For it is his only covering; it is his cloak for his skin. In what will he lie down? And if he cries out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

27You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler among your people.

28You shall not delay the fullness of your harvest and the outflow of your press. You shall give to me the firstborn of your sons.

29You shall do the same with your ox and with your flock: seven days it shall remain with its mother; on the eighth day you shall give it to me.

30And you shall be holy men to me. You shall not eat flesh torn in the field; you shall throw it to the dogs.
