Genesis 16

1Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children, and she had an Egyptian servant woman whose name was Hagar.

2Then Sarai said to Abram, “Look now, Yahweh has kept me from bearing children. Please go in to my female servant; perhaps I will be built up through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

3So Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her female servant, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife.

4He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

5Then Sarai said to Abram, “The wrong done to me is on you. I gave my female servant into your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, I became contemptible in her eyes. May Yahweh judge between me and you.”

6Then Abram said to Sarai, “Look, your female servant is in your hand; do to her what is good in your eyes.” Then Sarai afflicted her, and she fled from her presence.

7And the angel of Yahweh found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.

8And he said, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant woman, where have you come from, and where are you going?” And she said, “I am fleeing from the presence of Sarai my mistress.”

9Then the angel of Yahweh said to her, “Return to your mistress and humble yourself under her hand.”

10Then the angel of Yahweh said to her, “I will greatly multiply your offspring, so that it cannot be counted because of its multitude.”

11Then the angel of Yahweh said to her, “Behold, you are pregnant and will bear a son, and you shall call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your affliction.”

12And he will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand against him, and he will dwell opposite all his brothers.

13So she called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees me,” for she said, “Have I really here seen after the One who sees me?”

14Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. Look, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

15Hagar bore a son to Abram, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.

16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
