Genesis 2

1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their hosts.

2By the seventh day God had finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.

3So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all his work that God had created to make.

4These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that Yahweh God made the earth and the heavens.

5No shrub of the field was yet on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, because Yahweh God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to work the ground.

6But a mist would rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.

7Then Yahweh God formed the man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

8And Yahweh God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed.

9And Yahweh God caused to grow from the ground every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, and the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided and became four headwaters.

11The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one that goes around all the land of Havilah, where there is gold.

12And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there.

13And the name of the second river was Gihon; it is the one that goes around all the land of Cush.

14And the name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one that goes east of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15Then Yahweh God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and to keep it.

16And Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, “From every tree of the garden you may surely eat.”

17but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day you eat from it, you shall surely die.

18Then Yahweh God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper corresponding to him.”

19Yahweh God formed from the ground every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.

20And the man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal, but for the man no helper corresponding to him was found.

21So Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place.

22And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, he built into a woman, and he brought her to the man.

23Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called woman, because from man she was taken.”

24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and cling to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

25And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
