Genesis 28

1Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and commanded him, saying, “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.”

2Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother's father, and take for yourself from there a wife from the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.

3And may God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, so that you may become an assembly of peoples.

4May he give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your offspring with you, so that you may possess the land of your sojournings, which God gave to Abraham.

5So Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

6Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-aram to take a wife for himself from there, and that when he blessed him, he commanded him, saying, “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.”

7and that Jacob listened to his father and his mother, and went to Paddan-aram.

8And Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan were evil in the eyes of Isaac his father.

9So Esau went to Ishmael and took Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, the sister of Nebaioth, as a wife for himself in addition to his wives.

10Jacob departed from Beersheba and went to Haran.

11He came to a certain place and spent the night there, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, put it under his head, and lay down in that place.

12And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

13And behold, Yahweh was standing above it, and he said, “I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you are lying I will give to you and to your offspring.”

14Your offspring will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your offspring all the families of the earth will be blessed.

15And behold, I am with you, and I will keep you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.

16Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I did not know it.”

17And he was afraid and said, “How awesome this place is! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

18Jacob rose early in the morning, took the stone that he had placed at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on its top.

19And he called the name of that place Bethel, but formerly the name of the city was Luz.

20Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me on this way that I am going, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear,”

21and I return in peace to my father's house, and Yahweh will be my God.

22And this stone, which I have set up as a pillar, will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will surely give a tenth to you.
