Genesis 39

1Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there.

2Yahweh was with Joseph, and he became a successful man; and he was in the house of his Egyptian master.

3His master saw that Yahweh was with him, and that Yahweh made prosper in his hand all that he did.

4And Joseph found favor in his eyes and served him, and he appointed him over his house and put all that he had into his hand.

5And from the time he appointed him over his house and over all that he had, Yahweh blessed the Egyptian’s house because of Joseph, and Yahweh’s blessing was on all that he had, in the house and in the field.

6So he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, and he knew nothing with him except the food that he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and handsome in appearance.

7And after these things, his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.”

8But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my master does not concern himself with what is in the house, and everything that belongs to him he has put into my hand."

9There is no one greater in this house than I am, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do this great evil and sin against God?

10And it happened, as she spoke to Joseph day after day, that he did not listen to her, to lie beside her or to be with her.

11And it happened on such a day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was there in the house.

12Then she grabbed him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” But he left his garment in her hand and fled and went outside.

13And it happened, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside,

14Then she called the men of her household and said to them, “Look, he has brought a Hebrew man to us to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.”

15And when he heard that I had raised my voice and cried out, he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside.

16So she kept his garment beside her until his master came home.

17Then she spoke to him with words like these, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came to me to mock me.”

18And when I raised my voice and cried out, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.

19And it happened that when his master heard the words of his wife that she spoke to him, saying, “According to these words your servant did to me,” his anger burned.

20So Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison.

21But Yahweh was with Joseph and extended covenant faithfulness to him, and he gave him favor in the eyes of the chief of the prison.

22And the chief of the prison put into Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison, and whatever was done there, he was the one doing it.

23The chief of the prison paid attention to nothing that was in his hand, because Yahweh was with him; and whatever he did, Yahweh made prosper.
