Hebrews 5

1For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed on behalf of men in the things pertaining to God, so that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins,

2being able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself also is beset with weakness,

3And because of this he is obligated, just as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.

4And no one takes this honor for himself, but is called by God, just as Aaron also was.

5So also the Messiah did not glorify himself to become high priest, but the one who spoke to him: “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.”

6just as he also says in another place, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek,”

7who, in the days of his flesh, having offered up both prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one able to save him from death, and having been heard because of his reverence,

8Although he was a Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered,

9and, having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,

10having been designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

11About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull in hearing.

12For although by this time you ought to be teachers, you again need someone to teach you the basic elements of the beginning of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk, not solid food.

13For everyone who partakes of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is an infant.

14But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their powers of discernment trained to distinguish both good and evil.
