Jeremiah 28

Hananiah Dies for False Prophecy

Open in the reader →

And it happened in that year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, that Hananiah son of Azzur, the prophet from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of Yahweh, in the sight of the priests and all the people, saying,

Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.

Within two years, I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the house of Yahweh, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from this place and brought to Babylon.

And I will bring back to this place Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah who came to Babylon, declares Yahweh, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.

Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet in the sight of the priests and in the sight of all the people who were standing in the house of Yahweh:

Then Jeremiah the prophet said, “Amen! May Yahweh do so; may Yahweh fulfill your words that you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the house of Yahweh and all the exiles from Babylon to this place.”

Yet please hear this word that I am speaking in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people:

The prophets who were before me and before you from ancient times prophesied against many lands and against great kingdoms, of war and disaster and plague.

As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then that prophet will be known as one whom Yahweh has truly sent.

Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it.

And Hananiah said in the sight of all the people, saying, “Thus says Yahweh: In this way I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from upon the neck of all the nations within two years.” Then Jeremiah the prophet went on his way.

Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

Go and say to Hananiah, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD: You have broken wooden yoke-bars, but you have made iron yoke-bars in their place.’

For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: I have put an iron yoke on the necks of all these nations, to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they shall serve him. I have also given him the beasts of the field.

Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen, please, Hananiah: Yahweh has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie.”

Therefore, this is what Yahweh says: Look, I am sending you away from the face of the earth. This year you will die, because you have spoken rebellion against Yahweh.

And Hananiah the prophet died in that year, in the seventh month.
