Job 5

1Call now—is there anyone who will answer you? And to which of the holy ones will you turn?

2For anger kills the fool, and jealousy puts the simple to death.

3I have seen a fool taking root, and suddenly I cursed his dwelling.

4His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, with no one to rescue them.

5The hungry eat his harvest, and take it even from among the thorns, and the thirsty pant after their wealth.

6For trouble does not come from the dust, nor does toil sprout from the ground.

7For man is born for trouble, and the sons of flame fly upward.

8But as for me, I would seek God, and to God I would present my case.

9who does great things beyond searching out, wonders beyond number,

10who gives rain on the face of the earth and sends water over the open country,

11to set the lowly on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.

12He frustrates the schemes of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.

13He catches the wise in their craftiness, and the counsel of the twisted is rushed headlong.

14By day they meet darkness, and at noon they grope as in the night.

15But he saves the needy from the sword of their mouths and from the hand of the strong.

16So there is hope for the poor, and injustice shuts its mouth.

17Behold, blessed is the man whom God reproves; do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.

18For he causes pain, but he binds up; he wounds, but his hand heals.

19In six troubles he will deliver you; even in seven, no evil will touch you.

20In famine he will rescue you from death, and in war from the power of the sword.

21You will be hidden from the lash of the tongue, and you will not fear destruction when it comes.

22At destruction and famine you will laugh, and do not fear the wild animals of the earth.

23For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals of the field will be at peace with you.

24You will know that your tent is at peace, and when you inspect your dwelling, you will find nothing missing.

25You will know that your offspring are many, and your descendants are like the grass of the earth.

26You will come to the grave in ripe old age, like a stack of grain gathered in its season.

27Look, we have investigated this, and it is so. Hear it, and know it for yourself.
