John 9

1And as he was passing by, he saw a man blind from birth.

2And his disciples asked him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?”

3Jesus answered, “Neither this man sinned, nor his parents, but so that the works of God might be revealed in him.”

4We must do the works of the one who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.

5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

6After saying these things, he spit on the ground and made mud from the saliva, and he spread the mud on his eyes,

7And he said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated “Sent”). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.

8So the neighbors, and those who had seen him before as a beggar, were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?”

9Some were saying, “This is he.” Others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am he.”

10So they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”

11He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and spread it on my eyes, and he told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went away and washed, and I received my sight.”

12And they said to him, “Where is that man?” He says, “I do not know.”

13They brought the man who had formerly been blind to the Pharisees.

14It was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.

15So the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”

16So some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a sinful man do such signs?” And there was a division among them.

17So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”

18So the Jews did not believe concerning him that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the one who had received sight.

19And they asked them, saying, “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”

20So his parents answered and said, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.

21But how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.

22His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed him as the Messiah, he would be put out of the synagogue.

23For this reason his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”

24So they called the man who had been blind a second time and said to him, “Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner.”

25So that man answered, “Whether he is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know: though I was blind, now I see.”

26So they said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”

27He answered them, “I already told you, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You do not also want to become his disciples, do you?”

28They reviled him and said, “You are that man's disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.”

29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he is from.

30The man answered and said to them, “This is the remarkable thing: you do not know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes.”

31We know that God does not listen to sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does his will, he listens to him.

32From of old it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of one born blind.

33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.

34They answered and said to him, “You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?” And they cast him out.

35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

36He answered and said, “And who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?”

37Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.”

38And he said, “I believe, Lord,” and he worshiped him.

39And Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.”

40Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and said to him, “Surely we are not blind too, are we?”

41Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now you say, ‘We see,’ so your sin remains.”
