Joshua 11

1When Jabin king of Hazor heard of it, he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph.

2and to the kings who were in the north, in the hill country, in the Arabah south of Kinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor toward the west.

3the Canaanite in the east and in the west, and the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill country, and the Hivite below Hermon in the land of Mizpah.

4They came out, they and all their camps with them, a great people, as numerous as the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots.

5All these kings met by agreement, and they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.

6And Yahweh said to Joshua, “Do not fear them, for tomorrow at this time I am giving all of them over before Israel as slain men. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.”

7So Joshua, and all the people of war with him, came against them suddenly at the waters of Merom and fell upon them.

8And Yahweh gave them into the hand of Israel, and they struck them down and pursued them as far as Great Sidon and as far as Misrephoth-maim and as far as the Valley of Mizpeh to the east; and they struck them down until they had left them no survivor.

9And Joshua did to them just as Yahweh had told him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

10At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor, and he struck its king with the sword, for formerly Hazor was the head of all these kingdoms.

11They struck down every person who was in it with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction; not a single breathing thing was left, and he burned Hazor with fire.

12Joshua captured all the cities of these kings, and all their kings, and he struck them down with the edge of the sword. He devoted them to destruction, just as Moses the servant of Yahweh had commanded.

13But Israel did not burn any of the cities that stood on their mounds, except Hazor alone; Joshua burned it.

14And all the spoil of these cities, along with the livestock, the sons of Israel plundered for themselves; only all the people they struck with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them. They left no breathing thing.

15Just as Yahweh had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that Yahweh had commanded Moses.

16So Joshua took all this land: the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the lowland, the Arabah, the hill country of Israel, and its lowland.

17from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. And he captured all their kings and struck them down and put them to death.

18Joshua made war against all these kings for many days.

19There was not a city that made peace with the sons of Israel, except the Hivites living in Gibeon; they took all of them in battle.

20For it was from Yahweh to harden their hearts to meet Israel in battle, so that he might devote them to destruction, so that there would be no mercy for them, but so that he might destroy them, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

21At that time Joshua came and cut off the Anakim from the hill country—from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction, together with their cities.

22No Anakim were left in the land of the sons of Israel; only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod did some remain.

23So Joshua took all the land, according to all that Yahweh had spoken to Moses, and Joshua gave it to Israel as an inheritance according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land had rest from war.
