Leviticus 11

1And Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,

2Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘These are the living creatures that you may eat from among all the animals that are on the earth.’

3You may eat any animal that has a split hoof, completely divided, and that chews the cud.

4Nevertheless, you shall not eat these from among those that chew the cud or from among those that divide the hoof: the camel, because it chews the cud but does not divide the hoof; it is unclean to you.

5And the rock badger, because it chews the cud but does not divide the hoof, is unclean for you.

6And the hare, because it chews the cud but does not divide the hoof, is unclean for you.

7And the pig, because it has a divided hoof and splits the hoof, but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you.

8You shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.

9These you may eat from all that are in the waters: whatever in the waters, in the seas and in the streams, has fins and scales—these you may eat.

10But everything in the seas and in the streams that does not have fins and scales, among all the swarming things in the waters and among all the living creatures that are in the waters—they are detestable to you.

11And they shall be detestable to you; you shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall regard their carcasses as detestable.

12Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales is detestable to you.

13And these from among the birds you shall regard as detestable; they shall not be eaten; they are detestable: the eagle, the vulture, and the black vulture.

14the kite, and the falcon according to its kind,

15every raven according to its kind,

16and the ostrich, and the hawk, and the gull, and the falcon according to its kind,

17the little owl, the cormorant, and the great owl.

18the owl, the pelican, and the carrion vulture;

19and the stork, the heron according to its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.

20Every swarming winged creature that walks on four feet is detestable to you.

21Yet these you may eat from all the swarming things that fly, that go on all fours: those that have jointed legs above their feet to hop on the ground with them.

22These of them you may eat: the locust according to its kind, and the bald locust according to its kind, and the cricket according to its kind, and the grasshopper according to its kind.

23But every winged swarming thing that has four feet is detestable to you.

24And by these you shall become unclean: everyone who touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening.

25And everyone who carries any of their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening.

26As for every animal that has a divided hoof, but does not split the hoof completely and does not chew the cud, they are unclean to you. Everyone who touches them shall be unclean.

27And every one that walks on its paws, among all the animals that walk on four feet, they are unclean to you. Everyone who touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening.

28Whoever carries their carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. They are unclean for you.

29And these are unclean for you among the swarming things that swarm on the earth: the mole-rat, and the mouse, and the great lizard according to its kind.

30the gecko, the monitor lizard, the lizard, the sand lizard, and the chameleon.

31These are unclean for you among all the swarming things. Everyone who touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until the evening.

32And everything on which any of them falls when they are dead shall become unclean—from any wooden vessel or garment or skin or sackcloth, any vessel with which work is done. It shall be put into the water, and it shall be unclean until the evening; then it shall be clean.

33And every earthenware vessel into which any of them falls—everything that is in it shall become unclean, and you shall break it.

34Any food that may be eaten, on which water comes, becomes unclean; and any drink that may be drunk in any vessel becomes unclean.

35And anything on which any part of their carcass falls shall become unclean. Whether oven or hearth, it must be broken down; they are unclean, and they shall be unclean for you.

36However, a spring or a cistern collecting water shall remain clean, but whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean.

37And if any of their carcass falls on any seed for sowing that is to be sown, it is clean.

38But if water is put on the seed, and any of their carcasses falls on it, it is unclean to you.

39And if any of the livestock that may be used for food dies, the one who touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening.

40And the one who eats any of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening, and the one who carries its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening.

41And every swarming thing that swarms on the earth is detestable; it shall not be eaten.

42Anything that goes on its belly, and anything that goes on four feet, even every creature with many feet, among all the swarming things that swarm on the earth—you shall not eat them, for they are detestable.

43Do not make yourselves detestable by any swarming thing that swarms, and do not make yourselves unclean by them, so that you do not become unclean by them.

44For I am Yahweh your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. And you shall not defile yourselves with any swarming thing that moves on the earth.

45For I am Yahweh, who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God. And you shall be holy, because I am holy.

46This is the law concerning the livestock, the birds, every living creature that moves in the waters, and every creature that swarms on the earth.

47to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the creature that may be eaten and the creature that may not be eaten.
