Luke 24

1But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.

2And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb,

3But when they entered, they did not find the body.

4And it happened, while they were perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in dazzling clothing.

5And when they became terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, “Why are you seeking the living one among the dead?”

6He is not here, but has been raised. Remember how he spoke to you while he was still in Galilee,

7saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise again.

8And they remembered his words,

9And returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.

10They were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them; they were telling these things to the apostles.

11And these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women.

12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; and stooping to look in, he sees the linen cloths alone, and he went away to himself, marveling at what had happened.

13And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village sixty stadia from Jerusalem, whose name was Emmaus,

14And they were talking with one another about all these things that had happened.

15And it happened that while they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and was going with them.

16But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

17And he said to them, “What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad.

18Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

19And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who became a man, a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,”

20and how our chief priests and rulers handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him.

21But we were hoping that he is the one who is about to redeem Israel. Yet besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.

22But also, some women from among us astonished us, having gone early in the morning to the tomb,

23and not finding his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who say that he is alive.

24And some of those with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him.

25And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!”

26Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?

27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28And they came near to the village where they were going, and he acted as though he were going farther.

29But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is toward evening and the day has already declined.” And he went in to stay with them.

30And it happened that, when he reclined at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed it, and after breaking it, began giving it to them.

31Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he became unseen by them.

32And they said to one another, “Was not our heart burning within us as he was speaking to us on the road, as he was opening the Scriptures to us?”

33And rising that very hour, they returned to Jerusalem and found the Eleven and those with them gathered together,

34saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!”

35And they themselves were recounting the things that had happened on the road, and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

36While they were saying these things, he himself stood among them.

37But being startled and becoming afraid, they thought they were seeing a spirit.

38And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?”

39Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.

40And after saying this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

41And while they still were disbelieving because of joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

42And they gave him a piece of broiled fish.

43And taking it, he ate it before them.

44Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you: that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,

46And he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,”

47and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

48You are witnesses of these things.

49And look, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.

50Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them.

51And it happened that, while he was blessing them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven.

52And they, after worshiping him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

53And they were continually in the temple, blessing God.
