Luke 4

1And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was being led by the Spirit in the wilderness.

2for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days, and when they were completed, he was hungry.

3Then the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

4And Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘Man will not live by bread alone.’”

5And after leading him up, he showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited world in a moment of time.

6And the devil said to him, “I will give you all this authority and their glory, because it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I want.”

7Therefore, if you worship before me, it will all be yours.

8And Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve only him.’”

9Then he led him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here;”

10For it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’

11and, ‘On their hands they will carry you, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’

12And Jesus answered him, “It is said: You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.”

13And after finishing every temptation, the devil departed from him until an opportune time.

14And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding region.

15And he was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

16And he came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and as was his custom, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.

17And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him, and after unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written:

18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send out the oppressed in release,

19to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.

20And after rolling up the scroll and giving it back to the attendant, he sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.

21Then he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

22And all were speaking well of him and were marveling at the gracious words coming from his mouth, and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”

23And he said to them, “Surely you will say to me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ Whatever we have heard was done in Capernaum, do here also in your hometown.”

24And he said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.”

25But I tell you truly, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, as a great famine came over all the land.

26And Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath of Sidon, to a widow.

27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.

28And all in the synagogue were filled with anger when they heard these things,

29And rising up, they drove him out of the town and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, so as to throw him down.

30But he, passing through their midst, went on his way.

31And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbaths.

32And they were astonished at his teaching, because his word had authority.

33And in the synagogue there was a man having an unclean spirit of a demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,

34Ah! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.

35And Jesus rebuked it, saying, “Be silent and come out of him.” And after throwing him into the midst, the demon came out of him without harming him at all.

36And amazement came upon everyone, and they were speaking with one another, saying, “What is this word, that with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out?”

37And news about him was spreading into every place in the surrounding region.

38And after rising from the synagogue, he entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a high fever, and they asked him about her.

39And standing over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and began serving them.

40When the sun was setting, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each one of them and healed them.

41Demons also were coming out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the Son of God!” But rebuking them, he would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Messiah.

42And when day came, he went out and went to a deserted place. And the crowds were seeking him, and they came to him and were trying to keep him from going away from them.

43But he said to them, “I must also proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities, because I was sent for this.”

44And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
