Mark 5

1And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.

2And when he got out of the boat, immediately a man with an unclean spirit came out from the tombs to meet him,

3who had his dwelling among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.

4because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles smashed to pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.

5And continually, night and day, among the tombs and on the mountains, he was crying out and cutting himself with stones.

6And seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him,

7And crying out with a loud voice, he says, “What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”

8For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit.”

9And he was asking him, “What is your name?” And he says to him, “My name is Legion, because we are many.”

10And he begged him repeatedly not to send them out of the region.

11There was there near the mountain a large herd of pigs feeding.

12And they begged him, saying, “Send us into the pigs, so that we may enter them.”

13And he permitted them. Then the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs, and the herd—about two thousand—rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and they drowned in the sea.

14And those who were tending them fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside, and they came to see what had happened.

15And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting there, clothed and in his right mind—the one who had the legion—and they were afraid.

16And those who had seen it told them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and about the pigs.

17And they began to beg him to leave their region.

18And as he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed kept begging him that he might be with him.

19And he did not permit him, but said to him, “Go to your home, to your own people, and report to them how much the Lord has done for you and has shown mercy to you.”

20And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.

21And after Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he was beside the sea.

22And one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came, and when he saw him, he fell at his feet.

23And he begged him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be healed and live.”

24And he went with him. And a large crowd was following him and pressing around him.

25And there was a woman who had been suffering from a flow of blood for twelve years,

26and after suffering much under many physicians, and after spending all that she had and benefiting nothing, but rather becoming worse,

27having heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment.

28For she was saying, "If I touch even his garments, I will be healed."

29And immediately the flow of her blood dried up, and she knew in her body that she had been healed of the affliction.

30And immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?”

31And his disciples were saying to him, “You see the crowd pressing in on you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’”

32And he kept looking around to see the one who had done this.

33But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.

34But he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace, and be well from your affliction.”

35While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader's house, saying, “Your daughter has died. Why do you still trouble the Teacher?”

36But Jesus, overhearing the word being spoken, says to the synagogue leader, “Do not be afraid; only believe.”

37And he allowed no one to accompany him except Peter and James and John, the brother of James.

38And they come to the house of the synagogue leader, and he sees a commotion, and people weeping and wailing loudly.

39And after entering, he says to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child has not died, but is sleeping.”

40And they were laughing at him. But he, after putting them all outside, takes the child's father and mother and those with him, and goes in where the child was.

41And taking the child's hand, he says to her, “Talitha koum,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up.”

42And immediately the girl stood up and began walking, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were overcome with great amazement.

43And he strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and he said that she should be given something to eat.
