Matthew 6

1But be careful not to practice your righteousness before people in order to be seen by them; otherwise, you have no reward from your Father in the heavens.

2Therefore, whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be glorified by people. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward in full.

3But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

4so that your giving to the poor may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

5And whenever you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites, because they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the corners of the broad streets, so that they may be seen by people. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward.

6But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, and after shutting your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.

7And when you pray, do not heap up empty words like the Gentiles, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words.

8Therefore, do not become like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9Therefore, pray like this: Our Father in the heavens, may your name be treated as holy,

10May your kingdom come; may your will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth.

11Give us today our daily bread.

12And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

14For if you forgive people their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

15But if you do not forgive people, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

16And whenever you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so that they may appear to people to be fasting. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward in full.

17But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,

18so that you may not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

19Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22The eye is the lamp of the body. Therefore, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.

23But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be dark. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

24No one is able to serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You are not able to serve God and mammon.

25Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing?

26Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow or reap or gather into barns, and your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of much more value than they are?

27And which of you, by being anxious, can add one cubit to his stature?

28And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they do not labor, nor do they spin.

29But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these.

30But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into an oven, will he not much more clothe you, you of little faith?

31Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’

32For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
