Matthew 8
Jesus Heals Shows Authority
Open in the reader →1When he came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him.
And behold, a leper came and bowed down before him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you are able to cleanse me.”
And stretching out his hand, he touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
And Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one, but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, pleading with him,
and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.”
And he says to him, “I will come and heal him.”
And the centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.”
For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.
When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.”
But I tell you that many will come from east and west and will recline at table with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth there.
And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; as you have believed, let it be done for you.” And the servant was healed in that hour.
And when Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.
And he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and began serving him.
When evening came, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick.
so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, saying: “He himself took our sicknesses and carried our diseases.”
When Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go to the other side.
And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
And Jesus says to him, “Foxes have dens, and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
Then another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, permit me first to go away and bury my father.”
But Jesus says to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”
And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him.
And behold, a great storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was sleeping.
And they came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
And he said to them, “Why are you fearful, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”
And when he came to the other side, into the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so extremely fierce that no one was able to pass along that road.
And behold, they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with you, Son of God? Have you come here before the appointed time to torment us?”
A large herd of pigs was feeding some distance away from them.
And the demons kept begging him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
And he said to them, “Go.” Then they came out and went into the pigs; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and died in the waters.
Then the herdsmen fled, and going away into the city, they reported everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men.
And behold, the whole city went out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to depart from their region.
