Numbers 26

1And Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, saying,

2Take a census of the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ houses, everyone in Israel who goes out to war.

3Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke to them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,

4From twenty years old and upward, as Yahweh commanded Moses and the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt.

5Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: the sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites.

6from Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; from Carmi, the clan of the Carmites.

7These are the clans of the Reubenites, and those numbered from them were forty-three thousand seven hundred thirty.

8And the sons of Pallu: Eliab.

9And the sons of Eliab: Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram. These are that Dathan and Abiram, the called ones of the congregation, who contended against Moses and against Aaron in the company of Korah, when they contended against Yahweh.

10and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and Korah, when the congregation died, when the fire consumed two hundred fifty men; and they became a warning sign.

11But the sons of Korah did not die.

12The sons of Simeon by their clans: of Nemuel, the clan of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites; of Jachin, the clan of the Jachinites.

13of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites; of Shaul, the clan of the Shaulites.

14These are the clans of the Simeonites: twenty-two thousand two hundred.

15The sons of Gad by their clans: of Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the clan of the Haggites; of Shuni, the clan of the Shunites.

16of Ozni, the clan of the Oznites; of Eri, the clan of the Erites.

17From Arod, the clan of the Arodites; from Areli, the clan of the Arelites.

18These are the clans of the sons of Gad according to those numbered from them: forty thousand and five hundred.

19The sons of Judah: Er and Onan. But Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

20The sons of Judah by their clans were: of Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites; of Perez, the clan of the Perezites; of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites.

21The sons of Perez were: of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Hamul, the clan of the Hamulites.

22These were the clans of Judah according to those numbered of them: seventy-six thousand five hundred.

23The sons of Issachar by their clans: of Tola, the clan of the Tolaites; of Puvah, the clan of the Punites.

24of Jashub, the clan of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the clan of the Shimronites.

25These are the clans of Issachar according to those numbered from them: sixty-four thousand and three hundred.

26The sons of Zebulun by their clans: of Sered, the clan of the Sardites; of Elon, the clan of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the clan of the Jahleelites.

27These are the clans of the Zebulunites according to those numbered from them: sixty thousand and five hundred.

28The sons of Joseph by their clans: Manasseh and Ephraim.

29The sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the clan of the Machirites; and Machir fathered Gilead; of Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites.

30These were the sons of Gilead: of Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites; of Helek, the clan of the Helekites.

31from Ashriel, the clan of the Ashrielites; and from Shechem, the clan of the Shechemites.

32from Shemida, the clan of the Shemidaites; and from Hepher, the clan of the Hepherites.

33Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, but only daughters; and the names of Zelophehad’s daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

34These are the clans of Manasseh, and those numbered from them were fifty-two thousand seven hundred.

35These are the sons of Ephraim by their clans: of Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites; of Becher, the clan of the Becherites; of Tahan, the clan of the Tahanites.

36And these were the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the clan of the Eranites.

37These are the clans of the sons of Ephraim according to those numbered of them: thirty-two thousand and five hundred. These are the sons of Joseph according to their clans.

38The sons of Benjamin by their clans: of Bela, the clan of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the clan of the Ashbelites; of Ahiram, the clan of the Ahiramites.

39Of Shupham, the clan of the Shuphamites; of Hupham, the clan of the Huphamites.

40And the sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: from Ard, the clan of the Ardite; from Naaman, the clan of the Naamite.

41These were the sons of Benjamin by their clans, and those numbered from them were forty-five thousand six hundred.

42These were the sons of Dan by their clans: of Shuham, the clan of the Shuhamites. These were the clans of Dan by their families.

43All the families of the Shuhamites, according to those numbered among them, were sixty-four thousand four hundred.

44The sons of Asher by their clans: of Imnah, the clan of the Imnites; of Ishvi, the clan of the Ishvites; of Beriah, the clan of the Beriites.

45For the sons of Beriah: from Heber, the clan of the Heberites; from Malkiel, the clan of the Malkielites.

46And the name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.

47These are the clans of the sons of Asher according to those numbered of them: fifty-three thousand four hundred.

48The sons of Naphtali by their clans: of Jahzeel, the clan of the Jahzeelites; of Guni, the clan of the Gunites.

49of Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites; of Shillem, the clan of the Shillemites.

50These are the clans of Naphtali by their clans, and those numbered of them were forty-five thousand four hundred.

51These are the numbered men of the sons of Israel: six hundred one thousand seven hundred thirty.

52Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

53To these the land shall be divided as an inheritance according to the number of names.

54To the larger group you shall increase its inheritance, and to the smaller group you shall diminish its inheritance; each man's inheritance shall be given according to those numbered from him.

55Only by lot shall the land be divided; they shall inherit according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.

56According to the lot, his inheritance shall be divided between the larger and the smaller.

57And these were the numbered ones of Levi by their clans: of Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites; of Merari, the clan of the Merarites.

58These were the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnite, the clan of the Hebronite, the clan of the Mahlite, the clan of the Mushite, the clan of the Korahite. And Kohath fathered Amram.

59The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. She bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister.

60To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

61But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered strange fire before Yahweh.

62And those counted from among them were twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward, because they were not counted among the sons of Israel, because no inheritance was given to them among the sons of Israel.

63These are those counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who counted the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

64But among these there was not a man from those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest, who counted the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

65For Yahweh had said of them, ‘They shall surely die in the wilderness,’ and not a man was left of them except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
