Numbers 5

1And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2Command the sons of Israel that they send out of the camp everyone with a skin disease, and everyone with a discharge, and everyone unclean by a dead body.

3From male to female you shall send them outside the camp; you shall send them out so that they may not defile their camp, in the midst of which I dwell.

4And the sons of Israel did so, and sent them outside the camp; just as Yahweh had spoken to Moses, so the sons of Israel did.

5And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

6Speak to the sons of Israel: When a man or a woman commits any of the sins of mankind, by acting unfaithfully against Yahweh, then that person is guilty,

7then they shall confess the sin that they have committed, and he shall make full restitution for his guilt, adding a fifth to it, and give it to the one against whom he was guilty.

8But if the man has no kinsman-redeemer to whom restitution for the guilt may be returned, the restitution for the guilt that is returned to Yahweh belongs to the priest, besides the ram of atonement by which atonement is made for him.

9And every contribution from all the holy gifts of the sons of Israel, which they bring near to the priest, shall be his.

10And each man's holy gifts shall be his; whatever a man gives to the priest shall be his.

11And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

12Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them: If any man's wife goes astray and commits a breach of faith against him,

13and a man lies with her, with an emission of seed, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband, and she is concealed, and she has become unclean, and there is no witness against her, and she was not caught—

14and a spirit of jealousy comes over him, and he is jealous of his wife, and she has defiled herself; or if a spirit of jealousy comes over him, and he is jealous of his wife, though she has not defiled herself,

15Then the man shall bring his wife to the priest, and he shall bring her offering for her: a tenth of an ephah of barley flour. He shall pour no oil on it and put no frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering of jealousy, a memorial offering that brings iniquity to remembrance.

16Then the priest shall bring her near and make her stand before Yahweh.

17Then the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel, and the priest shall take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put it into the water.

18Then the priest shall set the woman before Yahweh, loosen the woman's hair, and place in her hands the grain offering of remembrance—it is a grain offering of jealousy—while in the priest's hand are the bitter waters that bring a curse.

19Then the priest shall make her swear and shall say to the woman, ‘If no man has lain with you, and if you have not gone astray in uncleanness under your husband, be free from these bitter waters that bring a curse.’

20But if you have gone astray while under your husband, and if you have become defiled, and a man has lain with you besides your husband—

21Then the priest shall make the woman swear with the oath of the curse, and the priest shall say to the woman, “May Yahweh make you a curse and an oath among your people, when Yahweh makes your thigh waste away and your abdomen swell.”

22and may these curse-bringing waters enter your inward parts, to make the belly swell and the thigh waste away. And the woman shall say, ‘Amen, amen.’

23Then the priest shall write these curses in the scroll and wash them off into the bitter water.

24Then he shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and the curse-bringing water shall enter into her bitterly.

25Then the priest shall take from the woman’s hand the grain offering of jealousy, and he shall wave the grain offering before Yahweh and bring it near to the altar.

26Then the priest shall take a handful from the grain offering, its memorial portion, and burn it on the altar; afterward he shall make the woman drink the water.

27When he makes her drink the water, then if she has defiled herself and has acted unfaithfully against her husband, the water that brings the curse will enter her for bitterness, and her belly will swell and her thigh will waste away, and the woman will become a curse among her people.

28But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, then she will be cleared and will conceive offspring.

29This is the law of jealousy, when a wife goes astray under her husband and becomes defiled,

30or when a spirit of jealousy comes over a man, and he is jealous of his wife, and he brings the woman before Yahweh, and the priest shall do to her all this law.

31Then the man will be free from guilt, but that woman will bear her guilt.
