Psalms 139

For the choirmaster. Of David. A psalm.

1O Yahweh, you have searched me and known me.

2You know my sitting down and my rising up; you understand my thought from afar.

3You sift out my path and my lying down, and you are acquainted with all my ways.

4Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Yahweh, you know it completely.

5You hem me in behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.

6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is too high—I cannot attain it.

7Where can I go from your Spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?

8If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there.

9If I take up the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the farthest part of the sea,

10even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me fast.

11If I say, “Surely darkness will cover me, and the light around me will become night,”

12Even darkness is not dark to you; the night shines like the day; darkness is like light to you.

13For you formed my inward parts; you wove me together in my mother’s womb.

14I praise you, because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are your works, and my soul knows it very well.

15My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in secret, woven in the depths of the earth.

16Your eyes saw my unformed substance, and in your book they all were written—the days that were formed, when not one of them yet existed.

17How precious your thoughts are to me, O God; how vast is the sum of them!

18If I were to count them, they would be more than the sand. When I awake, I am still with you.

19If only you would kill the wicked, O God! You men of blood, depart from me.

20who speak of you maliciously; your adversaries invoke you falsely.

21Do I not hate those who hate you, O Yahweh, and loathe those who rise up against you?

22I hate them with complete hatred; they are enemies to me.

23Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my troubling thoughts.

24See whether there is any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.
