Psalms 40

God Lifts David from Ruin

Open in the reader →

For the choirmaster. Of David. A psalm.

I waited patiently for Yahweh, and he turned to me and heard my cry for help.

He brought me up out of the pit of tumult, out of the miry clay; he set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure.

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and will trust in Yahweh.

Blessed is the man who has made Yahweh his trust, and has not turned to the proud, to those who turn aside to falsehood.

You have done many things, O Yahweh my God—your wonders and your plans for us; none can compare with you. Were I to declare and speak of them, they would be too many to recount.

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire; ears you have opened for me; burnt offering and sin offering you did not ask for.

Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written about me.”

I delight to do your will, my God, and your law is within my inner being.

I have proclaimed righteousness in the great assembly; behold, I have not restrained my lips; Yahweh, you know.

I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation. I have not concealed your steadfast love and your truth from the great assembly.

You, O Yahweh, do not withhold your compassion from me; may your steadfast love and your faithfulness continually preserve me.

For troubles beyond number have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, so that I cannot see. They are more numerous than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me.

Be pleased, O Yahweh, to deliver me; O Yahweh, hurry to help me.

Let those who seek to sweep away my life be put to shame and humiliated together; let those who delight in my harm turn back and be disgraced.

Let those who say to me, “Aha, aha!” be appalled because of their shame.

Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; let those who love your salvation say continually, “May Yahweh be magnified!”

But I am poor and needy; the Lord thinks of me. You are my help and my deliverer; my God, do not delay.
