Tobit 14

1And Tobit ceased giving thanks.

2And he was fifty-eight years old when he lost his sight, and after eight years he regained it; and he did acts of mercy, and he continued to fear God.

3He had grown very old; and he called his son and his grandsons, and said to him, “Child, take your sons. Look, I have grown old, and I am about to depart from life.”

4Go to Media, my child, because I am convinced that what Jonah the prophet spoke concerning Nineveh will happen: it will be overthrown. But in Media there will be peace for a while. And our brothers will be scattered from the good land, and Jerusalem will be desolate, and the house of God in it will be burned down, and it will be desolate until a time.

5And God will again have mercy on them and bring them back to the land, and they will build the house, though not like the former one, until the times of the age are fulfilled. And after these things they will return from the captivities and build Jerusalem honorably, and the house of God in her will be built gloriously, just as the prophets spoke concerning her.

6And all the nations will truly turn to fear the Lord God; they will bury their idols.

7And all the nations will bless the Lord. And his people will give thanks to God, and the Lord will exalt his people; and all who love the Lord God in truth and righteousness will rejoice, showing mercy to our brothers.

8And now, child, depart from Nineveh, because what the prophet Jonah spoke will surely happen.

9But you, keep the law and the commandments, and become merciful and righteous, so that it may go well with you.

10And bury me properly, and your mother with me, and do not stay any longer in Nineveh. Child, see what Nadab did to Ahikar, who had reared him—how he brought him from the light into the darkness, and all that he repaid him. But Ahikar was saved, while that man received the repayment, and he himself went down into the darkness. Manasseh did acts of mercy, and he was saved from the deadly snare that Nadab had set for him; but Nadab fell into the trap and perished.

11And now, children, see what almsgiving does, and how righteousness delivers. And while he was saying these things, his life came to an end on the bed. He was a hundred fifty-eight years old, and he buried him honorably.

12And when Hanna died, he buried her with his father. Then Tobias went away with his wife and his sons to Ecbatana, to Raguel his father-in-law.

13And he grew old honorably, and he buried his parents-in-law with honor, and he inherited their property and that of Tobit his father.

14And he died at one hundred seven years old in Ecbatana of Media.

15And before he died, he heard of the destruction of Nineveh, which Nebuchadnezzar and Ahasuerus had taken captive; before dying, he rejoiced over Nineveh. Amen.
