Tobit 2
Tobit Buries Despised Neighbor
Open in the reader →1When I had come down to my house, and Anna my wife and Tobiah my son were restored to me, on the feast of Pentecost, which is the holy feast of seven weeks, a fine meal was prepared for me, and I reclined to eat.
And I saw much food, and I said to my son, “Go and bring whichever one of our brothers you may find in need, who remembers the Lord; and behold, I am waiting for you.”
And he came and said, “Father, one of our own people has been strangled and thrown down in the marketplace.”
And I, before I had tasted anything, sprang up and removed him into a room until the sun set.
And when I returned, I washed myself and ate my bread in sorrow.
And I remembered the prophecy of Amos, as he said, “Your festivals will be turned into mourning, and all your rejoicing into lamentation.” And I wept.
And I wept. And when the sun had set, I went and dug and buried him.
And the neighbors were mocking, saying, “He is no longer afraid of being put to death over this matter; he ran away, and look, he is burying the dead again.”
And on that very night, after I had gone out and buried him, I lay down to sleep in a defiled state beside the wall of the courtyard, and my face was uncovered.
And I did not know that sparrows were in the wall; and while my eyes were open, the sparrows dropped warm dung into my eyes, and white films formed on my eyes. Then I went to physicians, but they did not help me. But Achiacharus supported me until I went to Elymais.
And my wife Anna worked at women's tasks;
And she would send it to the owners, and they also paid her wages, adding a young goat.
But when she came to me, she began to cry out, and I said to her, “Where is the young goat from? Is it stolen? Give it back to its owners, for it is not lawful to eat what is stolen.”
But she said, “It was given to me as a gift in addition to my wages.” But I did not believe her, and I told her to give it back to its owners; and I was embarrassed before her. Then she answered and said to me, “Where are your acts of mercy and your righteous deeds? Behold, everything about you is known.”
