Tobit 5

1And Tobiah answered him, “Father, I will do everything that you have commanded me.”

2But how will I be able to get the money, since I do not know him?

3And he gave him the written note and said to him, “Find for yourself a man who will go with you, and I will give him wages while I live; then go and get the silver.”

4And he went to look for a man, and he found Raphael, who was an angel, but he did not know it.

5And he said to him, “Can I travel with you to Rages of Media, and are you familiar with the places?”

6And the angel said to him, “I will go with you, and I am familiar with the way, and I have lodged with Gabael our brother.”

7And Tobiah said to him, “Wait for me, and I will tell my father.”

8And he said to him, “Go, and do not delay.”

9And he went in and said to his father, “Look, I have found someone who will travel with me.” And he said, “Call him to me, so that I may learn what tribe he is from, and whether he is trustworthy to go with you.”

10And he called him, and he went in, and they greeted one another.

11And Tobit said to him, “Brother, from what tribe and from what homeland are you? Show me.”

12And he said to him, “Are you seeking a tribe and a family line, or a hired man who will go with your son?” And Tobit said to him, “I want to know, brother,”

13to learn your family line and your name. But he said, “I am Azarias, son of the great Ananias, of your brothers.”

14And he said to him, “May you come in health, brother; and do not be angry with me because I sought to learn your tribe and your family. And you indeed turn out to be my brother, from a good and noble lineage. For I knew Ananias and Jathan, the sons of Shemaiah the great, as we used to go together to Jerusalem to worship, bringing the firstborn and the tithes of the produce; and they were not led astray in the error of our brothers. You are from a good root, brother.”

15But tell me, what wages shall I give you? A drachma a day, and your necessities, as for my own son?

16And I will add more to your wages, if you return in good health.

17They agreed to this. Then he said to Tobiah, “Get ready for the journey, and may your journey be prosperous.” So his son prepared what was needed for the journey. Then his father said to him, “Go with the man, and may God, who dwells in heaven, make your journey prosper, and may his angel go with you.” So both went out to depart, and the boy’s dog went with them.

18But Anna his mother wept and said to Tobit, “Why did you send our child away? Is he not the staff of our hand as he goes in and goes out before us?”

19Do not value silver against silver, but let it become refuse for our child.

20For as it has been given to us by the Lord to live, this is enough for us.

21And Tobit said to her, “Do not worry, sister; he will return safe and sound, and your eyes will see him.”

22For a good angel will go with him, and his journey will be successful, and he will return in good health.
