Chronicles 10
Saul Dies on Mount Gilboa
Open in the reader →1The Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
And the Philistines pursued Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.
The battle grew heavy against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was badly wounded by the archers.
Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer was not willing, because he was very afraid. So Saul took the sword and fell on it.
When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on the sword and died.
So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.
When all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that they had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled; then the Philistines came and lived in them.
It happened on the next day that the Philistines came to strip the slain, and they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
They stripped him, took his head and his weapons, and sent word throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news to their idols and to the people.
They put his armor in the house of their gods, and they fastened his skull in the house of Dagon.
When all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
Then all the valiant men arose and carried away the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh. They buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh and fasted seven days.
So Saul died for his unfaithfulness by which he was unfaithful to Yahweh, because of the word of Yahweh, which he did not keep, and also because he asked counsel of a medium, to inquire.
He did not seek Yahweh, so he put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.
