1 Chronicles 5

1The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel—for he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel, though not to be enrolled by birthright—

2For Judah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came the ruler, though the birthright belonged to Joseph.

3The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

4The sons of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son.

5Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son.

6Beerah his son, whom Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria carried away into exile—he was a chief of the Reubenites.

7And his brothers by their clans, in the genealogy of their generations: the chief was Jeiel, and Zechariah.

8and Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel; he lived in Aroer, as far as Nebo and Baal-meon.

9To the east he settled as far as the entrance to the wilderness from the river Euphrates, because their livestock had multiplied in the land of Gilead.

10In the days of Saul they made war with the Hagrites, and they fell into their hand; and they lived in their tents throughout all the region east of Gilead.

11And the sons of Gad lived opposite them in the land of Bashan, as far as Salecah.

12Joel the chief, Shapham the second, and Jaanai and Shaphat in Bashan.

13And their brothers, according to their fathers’ houses: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jachan, Zia, and Eber—seven.

14These were the sons of Abihail son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz.

15Ahi son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was head of their fathers’ houses.

16They lived in Gilead, in Bashan and its towns, and in all the pasturelands of Sharon, as far as their borders.

17All of them were enrolled by genealogy in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

18The sons of Reuben and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, valiant men, men who carried shield and sword, who drew the bow, and who were trained for war, were forty-four thousand seven hundred sixty, able to go out to war.

19They made war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.

20They were helped against them, and the Hagrites and all who were with them were given into their hand, because they cried out to God in the battle, and he answered them because they trusted in him.

21They captured their livestock: 50,000 camels, 250,000 sheep, 2,000 donkeys, and 100,000 people.

22For many slain fell, because the battle was from God; and they lived in their place until the exile.

23And the sons of the half-tribe of Manasseh lived in the land from Bashan as far as Baal-hermon, Senir, and Mount Hermon; they became numerous.

24These were the heads of their fathers’ houses: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty men of valor, men of renown, heads of their fathers’ houses.

25But they acted unfaithfully against the God of their fathers and prostituted themselves after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them.

26So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, even the spirit of Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria, and he took the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh into exile, and brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river Gozan, to this day.

27The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

28And the sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

29The sons of Amram: Aaron, Moses, and Miriam; and the sons of Aaron: Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

30Eleazar fathered Phinehas; Phinehas fathered Abishua.

31Abishua fathered Bukki, and Bukki fathered Uzzi.

32Uzzi fathered Zerahiah, and Zerahiah fathered Meraioth.

33Meraioth fathered Amariah, and Amariah fathered Ahitub.

34Ahitub fathered Zadok, and Zadok fathered Ahimaaz.

35Ahimaaz fathered Azariah, and Azariah fathered Johanan.

36And Johanan fathered Azariah; he was the one who served as priest in the house that Solomon built in Jerusalem.

37Azariah fathered Amariah, and Amariah fathered Ahitub.

38Ahitub fathered Zadok, and Zadok fathered Shallum.

39And Shallum fathered Hilkiah, and Hilkiah fathered Azariah.

40Azariah fathered Seraiah, and Seraiah fathered Jehozadak.

41And Jehozadak went away when Yahweh sent Judah and Jerusalem into exile by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.
