1 Enoch 22

1From there I went to another place, and he showed me in the west a great, high mountain and solid rock.

2Within it were four places, “beautiful,” deep, wide, and very smooth. (Three of them were dark and one bright, with a spring of water in its midst. I said:) How smooth—rolling—and deep and dark to look at!

3Then Raphael, one of the holy angels who was with me, answered and said to me, “These ‘beautiful’ places are for the spirits of the souls of the dead to gather in. For this they were created: to gather here every soul of the children of humanity.”

4These places were made to keep them until the day of their judgment, until the time of their appointed term—the term [which is greater]—until the great judgment comes upon them.

5I saw the spirits of the children of humanity who were dead. Their voice reached heaven and made accusation.

6Then I asked Raphael, the angel who was with me, “Whose spirit is this, whose voice rises in this way and makes accusation?”

7He answered me, saying, “This is the spirit that came out of Abel, whom his brother Cain killed. It accuses him until his offspring is destroyed from the face of the earth and his offspring disappears from the descendants of humanity.”

8Then I asked [about him and] about all the judgment: “Why have they been separated from one another?”

9He answered and said to me, “These three were made so that the spirits of the dead might be separated. In this way a place was set apart for the spirits of the righteous, where there is a spring of water, with brightness above it.

10“In the same way a place was created for sinners when they die and are buried in the earth, and judgment had not come upon them during their life.

11Here their souls are separated for this great torment until the great day of judgment, scourging, and torment for those who curse forever, and vengeance for their souls. There he will bind them forever [even though it is from before eternity].

12“In this way a place was set apart for the souls of those who make accusation, who give testimony about their destruction when they were killed in the days of sinners.

13“In this way a place was created for the souls of people who were not righteous but sinners, complete in wrongdoing, who will be with the wrongdoers, like them. But their soul will not be killed on the day of judgment, and they will not rise from here.”

14Then I blessed the Lord of Glory and said, “Blessed is my Lord, the Lord of Righteousness, who rules forever.”
