1 Enoch 60

1In the five-hundredth year, in the seventh month, on the fourteenth day of the month, in the life of Enoch, I saw in that vision how the heaven of heavens shook with a great shaking. The host of the Most High and angels, myriads of myriads and ten-thousands of ten-thousands, were greatly troubled.

2The Head of Days was sitting on the throne of his glory, and angels and righteous ones were standing around him.

3A great trembling took hold of me, and fear seized me. My loins were racked, my whole being came loose, and I fell on my face.

4Michael sent another angel from among the holy ones and raised me up. When he raised me, my spirit returned, for I could not bear the sight of that host, that tumult and shaking of heaven.

5Michael said to me, “What have you seen that has so troubled you? Until today the day of mercy has remained, and he has been merciful and slow to anger toward those who dwell on dry land.”

6“When the day, the power, the punishment and the judgment come, which the Lord of Spirits has prepared for those who do not bow to righteous judgment, who deny righteous judgment and take his name in vain—that day has been prepared as an oath for the chosen and an inquiry for sinners…”

7On that day the two great beasts were separated: the female beast, whose name is Leviathan, to dwell in the depths of the sea above the springs of water.

8And the name of the male was Behemoth, who occupies with his breast an unseen wilderness named Dundayin, east of the garden, where the chosen and the righteous dwell, where my great-grandfather was taken up, the seventh from Adam, the first of men whom the Lord of Spirits made.

9And I asked another angel that he should show me the power of those monsters, how they were separated on one day and were cast, one into the depths of the sea and one onto the dry land of the wilderness.

10He said to me, “You, son of man, seek here to know what is hidden.”

11The other angel who was walking with me and showing me things spoke to me. He showed me first and last in heaven, in the height of heaven, beneath dry land in the deep, at the ends of heaven and at heaven’s foundation.

12And the treasuries of the spirits, and how the spirits are divided, and how they are weighed out, and the portals of the spirits are reckoned, each according to the power of the spirit, and their powers for the light of the moon, and according to the power of righteousness, and the divisions of the stars by their names—every division shall be apportioned.

13And the thunder, according to their places of striking, and for every division that is divided by the lightning, so that it may flash—and their restraint, so that they may hear quickly.

14For resting places have been given to the thunder with patience for the sound of its voice; and the thunder and the lightning are not separated, and though they are not one, by the Spirit the two of them go together and are not separated.

15For when the lightning flashes, the thunder gives its voice, and the spirit rests at its appointed time, and it divides equally among them; for the treasury of their times is of sand, and the two of them are restrained with a bridle and turned back by the power of the spirit, and they are driven on likewise according to the many regions of the earth.

16And the spirit of the sea is male and strong, and according to the might of its strength he holds it back with a rein, and thus it is driven out and scattered among all the mountains of the earth.

17The wind of frost is its own angel, and the wind of hail is a good angel.

18The wind of rime is alive because of its strength. It has a wind of its own; what rises from it is like smoke, and its name is cold.

19And the spirit of the mist is not joined with them in their storehouses, but its own storehouse is by itself; for its course is glorious in it, both in light and in darkness, and in winter and in summer, and its storehouse is an angel.

20The wind of dew has its dwelling at the ends of heaven and adjoins the storehouses of rain. Its course is in winter and summer. The rain cloud and the cloud of mist join together, and one gives to the other.

21When the wind of rain is stirred from its storehouse, angels come and open the storehouse and bring it out. When it is scattered over all dry land, it joins the water on dry land; and whenever it joins the water on dry land… [The conclusion is missing in the selected text.]

22For water is for those who dwell on dry land; it is nourishment for dry land from the Most High who is in heaven. Therefore rain has a measure, and the angels receive it.

23I saw all these things as far as the garden of the righteous.

25When the punishment of the Lord of Spirits rests upon them, it will rest so that the punishment of the Lord of Spirits does not come in vain. It will kill children with their mothers and children with their fathers. [When the punishment of the Lord of Spirits rests upon these,] afterward judgment will be in mercy and patience.
