2 Chronicles 7

Fire Consumes Sacrifices

Open in the reader →

1And when Solomon finished praying, the fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of Yahweh filled the house.

2And the priests were not able to enter the house of Yahweh, because the glory of Yahweh filled the house of Yahweh.

3And all the sons of Israel, seeing the fire come down and the glory of Yahweh upon the house, bowed down with their faces to the ground on the pavement, and they worshiped and gave thanks to Yahweh: “For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”

4Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before Yahweh.

5And King Solomon sacrificed twenty-two thousand cattle and one hundred twenty thousand sheep, and the king and all the people dedicated the house of God.

6And the priests were standing at their posts, and the Levites with the instruments for the song of Yahweh, which David the king had made to give thanks to Yahweh, for his steadfast love endures forever, when David offered praise by their hand; and the priests were blowing trumpets opposite them, while all Israel was standing.

7Then Solomon consecrated the middle of the court that was before the house of Yahweh, because there he offered the burnt offerings and the fat portions of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar that Solomon had made could not hold the burnt offering, the grain offering, and the fat portions.

8At that time Solomon kept the feast for seven days, and all Israel with him, a very great assembly, from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of Egypt.

9On the eighth day they held a solemn assembly, for they observed the dedication of the altar for seven days and the feast for seven days.

10And on the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people to their tents, rejoicing and glad of heart because of the goodness that Yahweh had shown to David and to Solomon and to Israel his people.

11So Solomon finished the house of Yahweh and the house of the king, and everything that came upon Solomon’s heart to do in the house of Yahweh and in his own house he successfully accomplished.

12Then Yahweh appeared to Solomon by night and said to him, “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice.”

13When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people,

14if my people, who are called by my name, humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and heal their land.

15Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place.

16And now I have chosen and consecrated this house, that my name may be there forever, and my eyes and my heart will be there all the days.

17And as for you, if you walk before me as your father David walked, doing all that I have commanded you, and if you keep my statutes and my judgments,

18then I will establish the throne of your kingdom, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, ‘A man to rule over Israel will not be cut off from you.’

19But if you turn away and abandon my statutes and my commandments that I have set before you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them,

20then I will uproot them from my land that I have given them, and this house that I have consecrated for my name I will cast out of my sight, and I will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.

21And this house, which was exalted, will become a horror to everyone passing by it, and they will say, 'Why has Yahweh done thus to this land and to this house?'

22And they will say, ‘Because they forsook Yahweh, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and embraced other gods, and bowed down to them and served them, therefore he has brought all this disaster on them.’
