Deuteronomy 7
Israel Must Destroy Idols
Open in the reader →1When Yahweh your God brings you into the land that you are entering to possess, and drives out before you many nations—the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites—seven nations greater and mightier than you,
And when Yahweh your God gives them over to you before you, and you strike them down, you shall utterly devote them to destruction. You shall make no covenant with them and show them no favor.
And you shall not intermarry with them: you shall not give your daughter to his son, and you shall not take his daughter for your son.
For he will turn your son away from following me, and they will serve other gods; then the anger of Yahweh will burn against you, and he will quickly destroy you.
But this is what you shall do to them: you shall tear down their altars, shatter their pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their carved images with fire.
For you are a holy people to Yahweh your God. Yahweh your God has chosen you to be a treasured people for himself, from all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.
It was not because you were more numerous than all the peoples that Yahweh set his affection on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all the peoples.
but because Yahweh loves you and because he is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, Yahweh brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of servants, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Know, therefore, that Yahweh your God, he is God, the faithful God, keeping the covenant and the steadfast love for those who love him and for those who keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.
and repays those who hate him to their face, to destroy them. He does not delay with the one who hates him; he will repay him to his face.
So you shall keep the commandment and the statutes and the judgments that I am commanding you today, to do them.
And because you listen to these judgments, and keep and do them, Yahweh your God will keep for you the covenant and the steadfast love that he swore to your fathers.
He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground—your grain, your new wine, and your oil, the offspring of your herds and the young of your flock—in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you.
You will be blessed above all peoples; there will not be among you a barren man or woman, or among your livestock.
And Yahweh will remove from you all sickness, and none of the evil diseases of Egypt that you have known will he put on you; instead, he will put them on all who hate you.
And you shall consume all the peoples whom Yahweh your God is giving to you. Your eye shall not spare them, and you shall not serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you.
If you say in your heart, ‘These nations are more numerous than I; how can I dispossess them?’
You shall not fear them; you shall surely remember what Yahweh your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.
the great trials that your eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm by which Yahweh your God brought you out—so Yahweh your God will do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid.
Moreover, Yahweh your God will send the hornet among them until even those who remain and those who hide themselves from before you perish.
Do not dread them, for Yahweh your God is in your midst, a great and fearsome God.
And Yahweh your God will drive out these nations before you little by little. You will not be able to finish them off quickly, lest the wild animals become too numerous against you.
But Yahweh your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed.
And he will give their kings into your hand, and you shall make their name perish from under heaven. No man will stand before you until you have destroyed them.
You shall burn the carved images of their gods with fire. You shall not covet the silver or gold that is on them and take it for yourself, lest you be ensnared by it, for it is an abomination to Yahweh your God.
And you shall not bring an abomination into your house, or you will become devoted to destruction like it. You shall utterly detest it and utterly abhor it, for it is devoted to destruction.
