Deuteronomy 8

1You shall carefully keep every commandment that I am commanding you today, so that you may live and multiply and enter and possess the land that Yahweh swore to your fathers.

2And you shall remember all the way that Yahweh your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, to test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.

3And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you the manna, which you had not known, nor had your fathers known, so that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of Yahweh.

4Your clothing did not wear out on you, and your foot did not swell, these forty years.

5So know in your heart that, just as a man disciplines his son, Yahweh your God disciplines you.

6So you shall keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, by walking in his ways and by fearing him.

7For Yahweh your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of streams of water, springs, and depths flowing out in the valley and in the hill country.

8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey,

9a land in which you will not eat bread in poverty, in which you will lack nothing; a land whose stones are iron, and from whose hills you will quarry copper.

10And you shall eat and be satisfied, and you shall bless Yahweh your God for the good land that he has given you.

11Be careful lest you forget Yahweh your God by failing to keep his commandments and his judgments and his statutes, which I am commanding you today.

12lest, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them,

13and your herds and your flocks multiply, and silver and gold increase for you, and all that is yours increases—

14then your heart is lifted up, and you forget Yahweh your God, who brought you from the land of Egypt, from the house of servants.

15who led you through the great and fearsome wilderness, with fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water; who brought out water for you from the flinty rock,

16who fed you manna in the wilderness, which your fathers had not known, in order to humble you and in order to test you, to do you good in the end.

17and you say in your heart, ‘My power and the strength of my hand have gotten me this wealth,’

18But you shall remember Yahweh your God, for it is he who gives you power to gain wealth, so that he may establish his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

19And if you indeed forget Yahweh your God and go after other gods and serve them and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish.

20Like the nations that Yahweh is destroying before you, so you will perish, because you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God.
