Exodus 34

1Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Cut for yourself two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.”

2And be ready by the morning, and in the morning come up to Mount Sinai and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain.

3And no man shall go up with you, and indeed no man shall be seen anywhere on the mountain; even the flock and the herd must not graze in front of that mountain.

4So he cut two stone tablets like the first ones, and Moses rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai, just as Yahweh had commanded him, and he took the two stone tablets in his hand.

5And Yahweh came down in the cloud and stood there with him, and proclaimed the name of Yahweh.

6Then Yahweh passed before him and proclaimed, “Yahweh, Yahweh, a God compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.”

7keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but he will by no means leave unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on children and on children's children, to the third and to the fourth generation.

8Moses quickly bowed down to the ground and worshiped.

9And he said, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, Lord, please let the Lord go in our midst, though it is a stiff-necked people; and forgive our iniquity and our sin, and take us as your inheritance.”

10And he said, “Look, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will do wonders such as have not been created in all the earth or among any of the nations. And all the people in whose midst you are will see the work of the LORD, for what I am doing with you is awe-inspiring.”

11Keep what I am commanding you today. Behold, I am driving out before you the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

12Be careful, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land into which you are going, lest it become a snare in your midst.

13Instead, you shall tear down their altars, shatter their pillars, and cut down their Asherah poles.

14For you shall not bow down to another god, for Yahweh, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

15lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they prostitute themselves after their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and one of them invites you and you eat from his sacrifice.

16and you take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters prostitute themselves after their gods and make your sons prostitute themselves after their gods.

17You shall not make cast-metal gods for yourself.

18You shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the appointed time in the month of Abib; for in the month of Abib you came out from Egypt.

19Every firstborn of the womb is mine, and every male firstborn among your livestock, whether ox or sheep.

20You shall redeem the firstborn of a donkey with a lamb; and if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. You shall redeem every firstborn of your sons. And none shall appear before me empty-handed.

21Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall cease; in plowing time and in harvest you shall cease.

22And you shall observe for yourself the Feast of Weeks, the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year.

23Three times in the year all your males shall appear before the Lord Yahweh, the God of Israel.

24For I will drive out nations from before you and enlarge your border, and no man will covet your land when you go up to appear before Yahweh your God three times in the year.

25You shall not slaughter the blood of my sacrifice with leaven, and the sacrifice of the feast of the Passover shall not remain until the morning.

26You shall bring the first of the firstfruits of your ground to the house of Yahweh your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk.

27Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Write these words for yourself, for according to these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”

28And he was there with Yahweh forty days and forty nights; he ate no bread and drank no water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten words.

29And it happened, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in Moses' hand as he came down from the mountain, that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had spoken with him.

30When Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him.

31But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke to them.

32Afterward all the sons of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that Yahweh had spoken with him on Mount Sinai.

33When Moses finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face.

34But whenever Moses went in before Yahweh to speak with him, he would remove the veil until he came out; then he would come out and speak to the sons of Israel what he had been commanded.

35And the sons of Israel saw Moses’ face, that the skin of Moses’ face shone; and Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with him.
