Exodus 40
Moses Sets Up Tabernacle
Open in the reader →1Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
On the first day of the first month, you shall set up the tabernacle, the tent of meeting.
And you shall place there the ark of the testimony, and you shall screen the ark with the curtain.
Then you shall bring in the table and arrange what belongs on it, and you shall bring in the lampstand and set up its lamps.
And you shall place the golden altar for incense before the ark of the testimony, and you shall set the screen for the entrance of the tabernacle.
And you shall place the altar of burnt offering before the entrance of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting.
And you shall place the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar, and you shall put water there.
And you shall set up the courtyard all around, and put up the screen for the gate of the courtyard.
Then you shall take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and you shall consecrate it and all its furnishings, and it shall be holy.
You shall anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and you shall consecrate the altar, and the altar shall be most holy.
You shall anoint the basin and its stand, and consecrate it.
Then bring Aaron and his sons near to the entrance of the tent of meeting, and wash them with water.
And you shall clothe Aaron with the holy garments, and you shall anoint him and consecrate him, and he shall serve as priest to me.
And you shall bring near his sons and clothe them with tunics.
You shall anoint them just as you anointed their father, so that they may serve as priests to me. And their anointing shall be for them an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.
And Moses did according to all that Yahweh commanded him; so he did.
And it happened in the first month of the second year, on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was set up.
So Moses set up the tabernacle, and placed its bases, and set its frames, and put in its bars, and raised up its pillars.
Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent over it from above, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.
Then he took the testimony and put it into the ark, and he set the poles on the ark, and he placed the mercy seat on the ark above.
He brought the ark into the tabernacle, set up the veil of the screen, and screened the ark of the testimony, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.
He put the table in the tent of meeting, on the north side of the tabernacle, outside the veil.
And he arranged on it the bread in order before Yahweh, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.
He placed the lampstand in the tent of meeting, opposite the table, on the south side of the tabernacle.
And he set up the lamps before Yahweh, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.
And he placed the gold altar in the tent of meeting, before the veil.
And he burned fragrant incense on it, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.
And he put the screen at the entrance to the tabernacle.
And he set the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, and offered on it the burnt offering and the grain offering, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.
He placed the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water there for washing.
From it Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet.
Whenever they entered the tent of meeting, and whenever they approached the altar, they washed, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.
Then he set up the courtyard around the tabernacle and the altar, and put up the screen for the gate of the courtyard. So Moses finished the work.
Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle.
And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting, because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle.
Whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the sons of Israel would set out in all their journeys.
But if the cloud did not rise, they did not set out until the day it rose.
For the cloud of Yahweh was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, before the eyes of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.
