Genesis 4

1And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from Yahweh.”

2And she gave birth again, to his brother Abel. Abel became a shepherd of flocks, but Cain was a worker of the ground.

3And in the course of time, Cain brought to Yahweh an offering from the fruit of the ground.

4And Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock, and of their fat portions. And Yahweh regarded Abel and his offering,

5But for Cain and for his offering he had no regard. So Cain became very angry, and his face fell.

6Then Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?”

7If you do well, will there not be acceptance? But if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.

8And Cain said to Abel his brother. Then, while they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

9Then Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10And he said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground.”

11And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

12When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you. You will be a wanderer and a fugitive on the earth.

13And Cain said to Yahweh, “My iniquity is too great to bear.”

14Look, today you have driven me away from the face of the ground, and I will be hidden from your face. I will be a wanderer and a fugitive on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.

15Then Yahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” And Yahweh put a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should strike him.

16Then Cain went out from before Yahweh and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

17Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. He was building a city, and he named the city after his son Enoch.

18To Hanok was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.

19Lamech took for himself two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah.

20Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.

21And the name of his brother was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the lyre and the pipe.

22Zillah also bore Tubal-cain, a forger of every cutting tool of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23And Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my word: for I have killed a man for wounding me, even a young man for striking me.”

24For Cain is avenged sevenfold, and Lamech seventy-sevenfold.

25And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring in place of Abel, because Cain killed him.”

26And to Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of Yahweh.
