Isaiah 63
Warrior God Returns in Wrath
Open in the reader →1Who is this coming from Edom, with crimson garments from Bozrah—this one splendid in his clothing, marching in the greatness of his strength? It is I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save.
Why is your clothing red, and your garments like one who treads in the winepress?
I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples no man was with me; I trod them in my anger and trampled them in my wrath; their lifeblood spattered on my garments, and I stained all my clothing.
For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redeemed had come.
I looked, but there was no one to help; I was appalled, but there was no one to support. So my own arm brought me salvation, and my wrath—it upheld me.
I trampled peoples in my anger; I made them drunk in my wrath, and I brought their lifeblood down to the earth.
I will recount the steadfast love of Yahweh, the praises of Yahweh, according to all that Yahweh has bestowed on us, and the great goodness to the house of Israel that he has bestowed on them according to his compassion and according to the abundance of his steadfast love.
For he said, “Surely they are my people, children who will not deal falsely”; so he became their Savior.
In all their distress, he was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his compassion he redeemed them, and he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.
But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; so he turned against them as an enemy; he himself fought against them.
Then he remembered the ancient days, Moses and his people: “Where is the one who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of his flock? Where is the one who put his Holy Spirit within him?”
who led his glorious arm at the right hand of Moses, who split the waters before them to make for himself an everlasting name,
leading them through the depths like a horse in the wilderness; they did not stumble.
Like livestock going down into the valley, the Spirit of Yahweh gave them rest; so you led your people, to make for yourself a glorious name.
Look down from heaven and see, from your holy and glorious dwelling. Where are your zeal and your mighty deeds? The stirring of your inward parts and your compassions are withheld from me.
For you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us; you, O Yahweh, are our Father; our Redeemer from of old is your name.
Why, Yahweh, do you make us wander from your ways and harden our hearts from fearing you? Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance.
Your holy people possessed it for a little while; our adversaries have trampled your sanctuary.
We have become like those over whom you have never ruled, those who were never called by your name. If only you would tear open the heavens and come down; before you the mountains would quake.
