Isaiah 64

1As when fire kindles brushwood, and fire causes water to boil, to make your name known to your adversaries, so that nations tremble at your presence—

2When you did awesome things that we did not expect, you came down; the mountains quaked before you.

3From of old no one has heard, no ear has listened, no eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for the one who waits for him.

4You meet the one who gladly does righteousness, those who remember you in your ways. Behold, you were angry, and we sinned; in them we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?

5We all became like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; we all wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind.

6And there is no one who calls on your name, who stirs himself up to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us and have given us over into the hand of our iniquity.

7But now, O Yahweh, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we all are the work of your hand.

8Do not be exceedingly angry, O Yahweh, and do not remember iniquity forever. Look, please: we are all your people.

9Your holy cities have become a wilderness; Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

10Our holy and beautiful house, where our fathers praised you, has become a burning with fire, and all our precious things have become a ruin.

11Will you restrain yourself over these things, O Yahweh? Will you keep silent and afflict us so very severely?
